| Newbie | Greetings All! OK, so I couldn't wait long to ask a question. Is there any one anesthesia or "cocktail" that will be better than another so that I come out of anesthesia easier? I've only had one other surgery (hysterectomy 15 years ago) and the surgery & post-op were a breeze except that the anesthesia made me sluggish for 3 days. I felt lethargic, vomited, etc... I want to be up & around as soon as possible after the Lap RNY. Thanks, Midge |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Midge, I would suppose that would depend on the doc. I would assume that they all use about the same stuff. I know that I had a hard time with it and with the anti nausea med on top of it, I was out for about 4 days total. I couldnt even tell you how I got home if my husband hadnt driven the 2.5 hours. |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I have had tons of surgery.. And I can tell you that the meds have changed over the years. And it depends on how long you have to be out and such. And I am sure by each anesthesiologist but with a surgery like this you are bound to be sluggish..They need to make sure you dont wake up during this surgery. I have gotten awake when they gave me MAC sleep. That sucked.. But this year I had three surgeries and well each time I am blaahhh... At least I have not been sick. I always look at that as a plus. There are some meds that make me just vomit for days.. Talk to the anesthesiologist before hand and I am sure they will work with you anyway they can..

| Super Moderator | Yup, it's going to depend on the anesthesiologist, not the patient. The combo, the timing, the speed. That's where their expertise is. The dr will decide the best combination that fulfils the requirements for the surgery, what the surgery is, the health of the patient, etc. It's okay to discuss your concerns and what you would like with the dr, though, so good luck.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Everyone is different when they wake up, some people get sick, and some people dont have any problems. Myself i wake up and i get all emotional, Every time i have had a surgery. I know my first day of surgery i was on morphine all day. They were also giving me shots of some kind of anti-nausea med. So i never felt sick the entire time. I hope you dont feel sick, and if you do they will give you something for it.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Anesthesia meds have improved so much over the years that I dare say it will be nothing like you experienced 15 years ago. I was wide awake in the recovery room and when they took me back to my room, I immediately got up in a chair by myself. (The nurses, of course, were not too happy about that, but my back was kiling me!} My doc had me take an anti nausea med with a sip of water on my way to the hospital and I never felt the least bit nauseated. Good luck, I am sure you will do fine!

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Every surgeon is different, but mine gives 4 anti-nausea drugs before surgery and everyone is up walking later that day. Even my girlfriend was and she had Atavan before surgery. They are really pretty good about it with the new meds and anesthesia.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Your best bet is to ask if you could speak to the anesthisia department at the hospital you will be having your surgery. They usually are happy to discuss options and what is best for you....good luck. LittleLisaMarie ![]() |
