Default Car accident affecting my weight loss

I was hit by a car on Friday, Sept. 28th in 5:00 traffic. This gal hit five of us - we went like dominoes. I've been doctoring and esp. of concern to me is that my lap belt went across my incisions from my gastric bypass which I'd had on June 18th, 2007. My stomach swelled up with gas (X-rays were taken), but it's still troublesome. My dr. said it was from being in shock from the accident, so evidently my digestive system shut down. I was still able to eat and drink, but wasn't passing gas and having a hard time going #2. It's now a week and a half later and I'm stilly gas-y, but worse yet, since the accident, I haven't lost weight. Before, I'd been losing an avg. of five pounds a week, but now haven't lost anything. It's almost as if my body is protecting itself while healing up. Even though I've stuck to my diet, I have not been as active and was home for a week from work because I had to take muscle relaxers which made me sleep 12 hours straight. Any ideas on re-starting my weight loss? Do I just need to be patient? Should I get a second opinion from another dr. about my stomach gas? The doctor who did my Roux-n-Y said that since i can eat & drink, I'll be fine with time....???

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Wow Im So Sorry To Hear About Your Accident. You Can Be At A Stall Right Now Which Happens To All Of Us Or Maybe Your Body Is Tryng To Heal Itself Which Means It Will Stop Losing Wt. That Happened To Me When I Ended Up Having Complications From The Surger And The Doc Told Me Your Body Will Go Into Starvation Mode When Its Trying To Heal Itself And Your Wt Loss Will Stall For A While. Somtimes It Can Last For Days Or Weeks. Hang In There Hun And I Hope You Feel Better

Wow, sorry to hear about your accident.
I'm glad to hear your injury wasn't bad enough to land you in a hospital for a while, even though you are still hurting.

First off, are you having any pain, and is it getting any worse, or just feeling bloated up?
If you have any pain, especially if it seems persistent, or getting worse, you'll need to talk to your surgeon, but if it is getting better there, and you aren't throwing up, or blocked up, then, your surgeon is probably correct in saying that it should get better with time. If you have a bruise on you, then you'll probably see that it won't completely clear up until at least 2-3 weeks out, often, if you take a close look, you can see a faint shadow until past a month or so, and you can be sure that your insides are the same. It takes just as much time, sometimes a little added time, for your insides to heal in comparison with your outside. It's just that we can't see our insides that we sort of forget how long it can take for scars to heal.

Your weight loss stopping is due to your body trying to heal and protect yourself, so don't worry. Also, you are at a time when you could hit a stall, so that may be a factor, too. Even if your scale isn't moving, once your inside recovers from the accident, you'll be losing inches for sure, and your clothes will get looser, so you'll need to be patient with the scale.
Make sure that you get in the needed protein and water to speed up the healing, adding a little extra protein won't hurt.

Keeping you in my prayers that you get better soon.

Sorry to hear about the accident. Glad that your ok and hope the gas part is getting better. I was gonna say what the others said, its probably just a stall at this stage of the game with the no weight loss. We have all hit stalls so I think its just a coinsidence. But like Doc says if your not sure with things check again with your doctor and surgeon. Hang in there.

Thank you to all those who had a chance to respond about the car accident I was involved in. It has been a trying time, so thank you.
I am able to eat and drink just fine and I have even used the bathroom correctly now (#2), so am better today. You are all very nice people and I appreciate your advice and responses.

First of all im so sorry to hear about the accident you were in. That is stresfull in itself. Second where you were injured wasnt exactly the best place. Im thinking now I could be really off base here is your swelling. Your body is healing and protecting itself like you stated but the swelling can get to you. You did the right thing checking with your Dr and make sure if anything strange comes up you let the in on it. When I had my surgery on Sept 17th I weighed 363lbs. The day after i weighed 388 according to them. I know The next day I was so swollen in my abdomal area my hips legs and feet. I couldnt go to the bathroom unassisted if you know what I mean. My poor hubby went back to the 3 year old wipes needless to say. I think that is what is happeneing to you. It will go as quick as it come i would think. Just keep your Dr informed of yoru progress.

Default Update

Hello all,

My swelling is much better now two weeks after the accident. I continue to see the chiropractor and massage therapist. My left shoulder/collar bone area, left side and hips continue to bother me. I've been back to work full time now and get sore at the end of the day, but at least I can be there now. I'd love to start yoga and light aerobics now that I'm down to 220 lbs., but I don't know if Denise Austen (Austin?) is on television anymore. Seven years ago I had lost 90 pounds doing her routine six days a week along with taking Herbalife products (which of course I don't use now.)

Mary Ann
Surgery date: 16 Jun 07
296
now 220
-76 lbs.
