| Drains...and other stupid questions from a newbie!
I've seen "drains" mentioned and in my booklet from my surgeon I have a visit with a nurse to have the drain removed after I have the surgery. I'm an idiot... Where does this drain come out of your body? Does it hurt to remove it? What is draining out of your body? Where does it go?
Also...did you guys have a catheter in after your surgery? Did you have to do an enema? I had an appt to see the surgeon on Monday and a woman walked out with a couple of boxes of fleet enema and I freaked.
On that note...what's the worst part of the whole process?

All surgeons have different methods and different procedures for the surgery. Even our diets vary. I only had one drain and they removed it the next morning, really before I was even aware I had one...LOL. I didn't have to do any enema or even a special diet prior to surgery. But like I said each surgeon is slightly different in the way they do things.

My doctor has you go on a 2 week 800 calorie/day diet beforehand. In the booklet there are examples...that's a whopping 4 cans of slimfast a day. That will be very, very tough. Hell, if I could stick on that diet I'd probably lose the weight myself without needing surgery. I know it reduces the size of my liver and all...but for 2 weeks seems extreme. I'm looking forward to hearing from Doc on that one...

I Had A Drain In Me For About 2 Weeks And When The Doc Took It Out It Was Very Painful For Me. But Then Again I Had The Other Drain Removed About 3 Weeks Later And That One Didnt Hurt. I Had 2 Drains In Me Only Because I Needed An Additional Drain Due To Complications I Had During Surgery. Hun When You See Your Surgeon Ask All The Questions You Need To. All Docs Are Different.
Oh And Yes Most Everyone Has A Catheter In Them When You Wake Up From Surgery But It Will Be Removed By The Next Day Or So.

Funny you should mention "when you see your surgeon..." This is my 2nd time going through this as I was denied by insurance the first time. I saw my...uh..."surgeon" for the second time on Monday. Reality: I saw a resident...as the surgeon was called away for an emergency and I'd already been waiting 2+ hours and I had to get out of there by 5pm... I also feel I get more straight forward and blunt answers from you guys rather than the medical-type answers from doctors.
The catheter thing bothers me tremendously. Ugh. They don't put it in until you're out, right?

| Hey Girl!! "MLG78" - WOW....I'm sooo sorry that you saw the resident...that's gotta be frustrating. My doc was sooo busy all the time, we always planned a 2-3hr. wait past the scheduled time....WHAT is THAT ABOUT...???? A total pain...but basically my hubby nailed it....my doc has such a great bedside manner that he doesn't do time management very well...and is always overbook and running over! I'm glad you feel comfortable with asking all the questions you need to know here. At least you know that you are having drains. Not all doctors use them....I had a lap RNY...an never had any drains....did great without so I can't give you any of my opinion there...but I will say - BOOTS is absolutely correct - you don't have to worry a bit about the catheter....the do it after your out...and remove it when you are in recovery. Funny story....I was coming out of my anesthesia in recovery and actually remember them removing my cath (DID NOT hurt a bit....) but the nurse spilled my pee on the floor....I remember them talking about it and then mustering up my first words, "Don't try to blame me for peeing on the floor - you better tell everyone that was YOUR fault!!" Got a crack up from all the nurses...and then my doctor came up and said "somebody is waking up with a great sense of humor....." |

Your peeing story made my night! When I was 8 years old I had my tonsils out and immediately as I was coming to my doctor came to my side. I grew up in a very small town and his son was in my class in grade school so I knew him very well. I promptly leaned over the railing and puked on his shoes.

The most recent data says that the more you are able to lose during your pre op preparations, the better you will do post op. http://www.renewedreflections.com/fo...lpful-upi.html |
