Default Night Before Surgery Question

A friend of mine called me earlier while my husband and I were out enjoying a sunday brunch. She was shocked I was eating the day before (she had surgery 5 yrs back) because she didn't and also was given some nasty stuff to drink the night before to clean her out. I wasn't given anything to take in prep for tomorrow's surgery. Has anyone else not been given this "nasty tasting - clean you out med"?

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

First of all good luck tomorrow on your surgry Day. All suregeons are different. I did not have to drink anything to clean me out. I did have to do a clear liquid diet 24 hours prior. I have heard of some of the ladies on here have to do 2 weeks or more of liquid diets too. They are all different.

As long as your doing what you surgeon says then you should be fine for tomorrow. Good luck.

I could eat up until noon the day before...then only liquids until midnite the night before...the more you read around here, you will see exactly how every surgeon is different!

LSU, prayers will be going up for you tomorrow, I'm sure everything will be just fine. As far as my pre-op preparation, I had to eat very light the week before, then the day before I had to drink the citrate to clean me out. But as others said, all surgeons are different. I'm sure you are following what your doctor instructed. Let us know how you are doing after your surgery.

Default OMG- yes, yes, yes! VERY NASTY VILE STUFF to drink

I can't tell you enough how nasty that stuff was!! I can still taste it... I told me heavyset sister taht i was going to make her drink one of these "poop" coctails a month until she learned how to control her eatting!! She simply eats too much just to eat-- she has never had weight issues until her first love broke her heart, nad now she won't stop! LOL- so i threatened her witht he poop drink

Anyway, my doc had me diet for about 3 weeks prior to surgery. I had to stop all vitmains, minerals, green tea, asprin etc., and I had to do a high protein diet and increase my water. Then the day before i was allowed to eat "my last meal" up to 3pm. Then at 3pm i had to have the citrate drink- EWWWWWWWWWWWWW!! I pooped for about 12 hours!! But it worked

Thanks everyone, for a minute I thought my doctor forgot to tell me something. I've had to drink the "nasty" stuff before and DID NOT want to do it again. LOL

Default LSU- my prayers to you too! Here are MY tips about surgery

You will be fine! I just had my surgery a few days ago... here are some tips/advise from me... some is overkill and i am sure you know most of this, and some info you might not want to know, but i share with you so you will have a better idea of what to expect. Every person had a different experience, so i share my tips with you soley based on my expereince

These tips might help you not panic if/when certain things happen to you.

Day 1- is surgery and you will not be allowed any drink (water) or ice or food. Because of the surgery, I have 6 what i call "bullet holes" in my upper abdomen, and they are already healing and do not hurt. In fact, they never hurt I rather bullet holes then to be sliced open.

Day 2- still no food, ice chips or water.

Day 3- in the morning i had what i call the "leak test" (i forget the clinical name for it) and i had to drink YUKY stuff while being xrayed. The Dr then watched the liquid proceed through my body to check for ... leaks!! lol

Once the reslults came back from the test, i got the all clear, and i was allowed ICE CHIPS!! YIPPY!! I can't believe what a treat that felt like!! LOL. But then as the day wore on around 1pm, i was allowed my first tray of FOOD!! But truthfully i could have cared less, i was not even once hungry or thirsty for all these days yet. This "food" (called stage 1) was a 4 oz cup of chicken broth, a 4 oz jello, a 6 oz ice tea, a 6 oz water, a cup of ice chips and a 4 oz apple juice diluted with water. I was also allowed salt packets and sweet-n-low. This food was what i ate 3 times each day for each meal. I don't think i ever got through a full tray of food on any day-- it really felt like too much food.. but the most important thing to get in is the WATER to avoid dehydration. So i mostly had water and at tried the broth for something more substantial in my system.

Day 4- typically you get to go home if you ate without problems, your vitals are good, and your urine and bowls (if you move them) are all good.

Be sure to walk as much as you can- as soon as you can. I walked everytime i had to pee-- which was about every 2 hours!! LOL
"they say" to walk about every 3 hours or so, but serioulsy, the more the better.

Walking REALLY helps the healing, keeps the blood flowing to avoid clots/stroke, and relieves the gas/bloat... (you will feel like 1000 pounds at first) also, don't be a hero-- TAKE THE MEDS!! at least until your pain is about a 5 out of 10 and you can handle it.

The first 24 hours can really hurt... mostly from the gas/bloating. Once you are out of surgery, that day and night you will be very bloated. So walk, walk, walk... You will have pain all in your upper abdomen/chest area, and even in your arms, shoulders, and back-- it is normal-- not signs of heart attack. As each second goes by i promise you, you do feel better- just hang tight and keep calm. The next day following surgery (for me) is when the "surgery" pain kicked in and the painful feeling of the bloating (not my bodys puffiness) went away. WHAT a relief that was!! The next day, i was off all pian meds, and was able to handle the pain on my own.

ALso, do the breathing exercises, they had me deep inhale from some inhale thingy and it helped to get my lungs back up to speed and clear out the meds, and clear out some mucus that was in my lungs. It made for a more comfortable healing too.

Your nose (from the oxygen) and throat will feel dry and voice hoarse and you may have to cough some, it is OK-- just be careful if you cough.

ALso, your blood pressure (bp) and body temperature will be going up and down like crazy-- do NOT panic, it is normal. "they say" anything under 101 is NOT a fever and so you should not worry. As for your oxygen 96-100 is normal. If you BP goes to like 150/87 don't worry-- between the meds and surgery your body will go a bit nuts. I had BP of 97/64 then an hour later 110/70 then later 150/80! lol. Now i am a steady 110/68.

Ok, well, i think i said it all... but let me know if any questions
God Bless and best of luck!
