Red face How secure are the staples and sutures?

I have heard different anwers to this same question. Some say after the first 24 hours that short of doing something drastic, the staples and sutures won't rip. But then some say 2-3 days and some say 4 months...

I ask, because i worry about busting my staples and sutures by food/vitamins i have (will) eat.

For example...

Vitamins: i have several that i take and i break them up and swallow with liquid (the chewables make me want to ) so i take regular capule types.

BUT there are 2 of them that i can't break and so i just swallow them- whole, with liquid. I have no problems doing this so far.

FOOD: last night i ate something from my STAGE 3 diet thinking it was a STAGE 2 food!! I read my food list so much that I am now mixing my stage foods up in my head!!

I ate some pastina (it's small baby pasta). It (sorta) has the thinkness of farina- maybe thicker.

I chewed it until it was like soft baby food- though some pieces went down were larger then others (i swallowed some before i can stop it).

But I had no problems with it, it felt great to eat it, and even today there are no problems. It agreed with me.

SO.... will this weaken my sutures and/or staples and/or stretch the pouch??

I am paranoid to eat the wrong thing!!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

be careful
the issues with the pastina yes its tiny
but it can swell up in ur tummy and cause
ur healing pouch to expand. RICE is a no no
early out too.......

please be careful cause yes its a healing
suture line inside you. I am sure if you did
something wrong u would know by now and
be throwing up coffee grinds or in major
pain!
be slo
be careful!
hugs its a scary time early out
but im sure your fine

its more that a food like that can
expand....! proly why its not on
soft food phase foods

I agree with Friendly. I was told to stay away from pasta for quite some time. I am 6 months out and I still pretty much stay away from it. Maybe one bite here and there when my family has it but I tend to stay away from it being a carb and like Friendly says it swells inside of you. but then again all surgeons are different.

Ditto - it's kinda nice that you had no ill effects. I still have to work at getting my protein in so I focus on protein, too. My most often eaten carb would have to be a very small serving of mashed potatos or my oatmeal - yes, I am careful with it as it can swell too!

My book says no pasta for 6 months and I will follow the instructions. I don't want to stretch anything until they tell me I can I guess. I am wanting salad in the worst way but that is out too until after 6 months and I figure I can have something to look forward to

(((HUG)))) NY GAL!
you may feel grand!
but alot of healing is going on
the inside.

ANOTHER food to steer off of for some time (actually took me 14 months)
to be able to have was micro popcorn. IT was swell and hurt my pouch.
and gas me up too much and that hurts!!!!

i think you want to avoid puking at all costs this early out. and things that swell have the potential to make you puke. dontbeat yourself up over the wrong food choice. just start fresh tomorrow and stick to the plan. heal before venturing out. youll be fine.

I was also afraid of that, im only a couple of months out and im still worried that i might break the staples. About the pasta, every dr. is different but mine said that i could have pasta at six weeks, so i have tried it with no problems. Also i was not aloud to swallow whole pills until six weeks. But my dr. said to get my pretein in and then a veg or carb. My dr. basically said i should not me deprived on anything, if you want something take a bite and see how it goes. No sugars nothing very high in fat. I have not dumped or puked yet. I hope i dont for a very long time.

I was swallowing WHOLE pills in the hospital, right after surgery. I take estrogen regularly, and they told me to swallow it down....(the pill isn't huge, but I have yet to quit taking pills since surgery). I do the chewable vitamins, as I was told the absorption is better for us, and the ones I used are designed for WLS patients!

I do eat pasta on occasion...but usually no more than a bite or 2....I always start with protein, add veggies in for taste....in general, I avoid carbs!
