| Home 2 AFTER BYPASS! What pain level is normal? I made it through, I must admit the procedure was more painful than I expected which is totally not like me. I'm having no problems sticking the clear liquids and protein supplements, etc BUT I am more than ready for a variety.
My question for all is at what point could you stop taking the pain pills?

yeah everyone is different.
I hated takeing them cause
my surgeon at the time of mysurgery
required me to take them crushed
and that totally gaged me so i weaned
off them by 3 days home.
I also found i was havin a hallusinations
when going to sleep and it was troubleing me...
which i think was a result of comeing off the
morphine drip used in the hospitol

I have a very high pain tollerance level (or at least always b/4 this surgery). This one was hard on me pain wise. I took my pain meds for the first 2 weeks. I had liquid hydrocodine. I started tappering off the second week. I took a few doses the third week when I needed them. My logic is that if you hurt, take the meds. In my younger days I might have tried to tough it out, but the older and wiser me doesn't understand why I did that...LOL.
So, if you hurt take the meds. You don't get a present for not taking them...LOL

I actually took my last pain med before they released me to make the 2.5 hour ride "more enjoyable". I didnt really have any pains after the surgery, other than the ocassional rolling over on my tummy in my sleep. That woke me up in a hurry. LOLOL I will get easier on you.

I quit taking them the second day home, except for one at bedtime. I quit the bedtime one after a week. But it all depends on how you feel. If you are hurting, take the pills, if you aren't - don't.

I was on them for the first like two days and then I would just take some at bedtime to help me sleep with moving around and etc......But other than that I didnt really have any pain and need them.

| Ok, so I'm in the minority here. I typically dont take a lot of pain meds, after my hysterectomy I used less than I Rx for pain and still had pills left months later. This surgery really kicked my butt!!!! I have never taken so much pain med for so long. I was on the percocet syrup - yuck! - and usually spent the last hour before I could take more doing deep breathing exercises. I dont know why it hurt me so much but it was definitely not what I had expected. (If you had read my posts early on I was pretty miserable) I took my meds for probably 4 weeks regularly and then for the next two as needed. Looking back, I think it was, to some degree, gas from the lap procedure. I even considered seeing another surgeon at one point because I thought there must have been a problem no one wanted to mention to me. Here's the good news though, once it passed I was 100% better immediately (another reason I think it was gas) and I've felt awesome ever since. Take your meds as directed or as needed if you don't need as much. Focus on taking care of you right now, figure out the whole supplement puzzle and sip sip sip to get your liquids down. Best wishes
