Alternative Names: Hypertrophic scar; Keloid scar; Scar - hypertrophic Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Keloids occur from such skin injuries as surgical incisions, traumatic wounds, vaccination sites, burns, chickenpox , acne , or even minor scratches. They are fairly common in young women and African Americans. Keloids often run in families. Keloidosis is a term used when multiple or repeated keloids occur. Most keloids will flatten and become less noticeable over a period of several years. They may become irritated from rubbing on clothing or other forms of friction. Extensive keloids may become binding, limiting mobility. They may cause cosmetic changes and affect the appearance. Exposure to the sun during the first year of the keloid's formation will cause the keloid to tan darker than surrounding skin. This dark coloration may become permanent. |

Ooooo, great question! I've been wondering about this. Now I have all these great suggestions! Thanks! On a side note...why does keloid form? I dealt with a client a few months ago with AWFUL keloid. I'm a social worker who works with crime victims in the court system and her face had been sliced open with a razor blade and was given over 500 stitches, all in her face. I'll have to let her know that it's possible to have keloid removed. She's so young...and I'd hate to see her go through life like that. Thanks again!

i think from what i understand it is genetic. no clue. ive always grown them. not as bad as some peoples though. im not afaid to have it removed, i just dont see the point. if they cut me, it will keloid again at some point i would think LOL.

FYI. When removing a keloid, the surgeon will take special care, like using smoother and slimmer threads for sutures, pressure bandages, oils and ointments etc, so, even if some keloid does reform, it is much better than than what was removed. There are plastic surgeons who specialize in keloid removal, or in preventing keloids, so if it concerns you a lot, then you can look them up. Whether insurance covers them is another matter, however.
