Question Dehydration

Hi everyone,

My name is elliejon and I had my surgery about 9 months ago. I really haven't had many problems until the last two months. I had to have an IV last month because of dehydration and yesterday I had another one. I felt extremely fatigued, dizzy, my heart was fluttering, etc. Does anyone else have this problem??? I try to drink water or sports drinks but apparently I am not drinking enough. I feel better today after my IV but really not back to normal. Is this normal for a weight loss patient? The doctors at the clinic (not where I got my surgery) are not really concerned and I hate to drive way up to the University of Minnesota. I do have an appointment at the U in April. Yesterday, I started on Ensure.....UGH. I also had the diarrhea for two weeks. It seemed as though everything I put in my mouth went straight through. It is much better today.
Anyway, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

How much liquids were you instructed to get in per day?
The norm is 64oz per day.
Also, what about your protein and supplements?
You need to get in at least 60g per day, or more, depending on your surgeon's instructions.
What about your vitamins and minerals? Has your surgeon given you a directive there, and are your blood levels good?
Sounds like the diarrrhea messed up with you some, though.
((((((HUGS)))))) Hope you feel better soon.

I too had a problem with dehydration, what worked for me was 1/2 gatorade and 1/2 unflavored Pedialite. My surgeon had me drinking this for 48 hours. Hope this helps you!

Default So Sorry

I am so sorry to hear about your illness. I too have trouble getting my 64 oz. To me water has tasted funny since my surgery. I don't know why, I also loved water prior to the surgery. Now the only way I can get enough fluid is if I drink unsweetened iced tea. Now this is a problem because it has caffiene and I know that is a diuretic.

I have trouble with sugar free drinks, like Crystal Light, because they taste horribly sweet to me. I don't know why everything tastes so weird since surgery. I think it is because of my cotton mouth. My mouth is always so dry. I can't believe how now I deal with things I never would have imagined before the surgery. This thing really does change your whole life.

I sure hope you are feeling better. I am sure your surgeon could give you lots of ideas to help you get enough liquids to help get over this hump. Take care of yourself.

I hope everything is better for you. You have got to find something that you like, and just force it all day & night. I've read about being dehydrated, and it sure doesn't sound fun. Plus it is just soooo dangerous. Please keep us posted. Prayers goin up for you!

I'm pushing so much fluid, I'm checking the bald spots on my head to see if gills are growing in!!! (JUST KIDDING...no bald spots...and NO GILLS!!!)

They told me 64 ounces, but I'm usually sitting between 75 - 100 ounces a day! We have an Ozarka Spring Water cooler at the office, and I just keep refilling my 25 ounce bottle.....and of course, going to the bathroom CONSTANTLY!!!
