| Post surgery when you are given the go ahead to start exercising are their any limitations?? Is it realistic for me to set a goal of running a marathon in 5 years? I loved running in College and I would love to regain the power I felt when I was a runner. Do any of you run on a regular basis and I was wondering if hydration during exercise is a problem. |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I'm with Friendly! Go for it -- if you love to run more power to you and five years is a very realistic goal. That's great that you actually "love" an excercise that will be good for you. I can't seem to even "like" any excercise but I do them anyway! **lol** |

| Super Moderator | Yes, YEs, YES, go for it!!! You'll probably cleared for full strenuous activity at 6 months. After that, it's a matter of proper training and preparation. 5 years is plenty of time, I think you'll be able to get there in 2-3 years, actually, with good mentors, trainers and coaches. Keeping water handy is a necessity, but you should be able to do it, once you learn your pace. Good luck!!! I have a friend who runs a full marathon with her hubby, tagged along when they ran in the Honlulu marathon, and did the 10km walk that's done together. Tokyo started a citizen's full marathon a couple of years ago. Aim for it, and I'll root for you along the route!

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | definitely it's an awesome goal to have and certainly it's realistic to achieve this earlier than you plan! Here's some of the low down I've learned from training with trainers for the fire dept. test....this isn't info FROM the trainers it's what -I- learned. we don't build muscle like before..high protein foods a must when you get to a certain higher level of exercise. We also break down more easily with muscle tears...so we NEED to do weights every 3rd day NOT every other day to get the best and strongest result. We need more time to recover. Running is a sloooow long process. I did walking for months, with working up to walking with weights, then speed walking, speed walking with weights before I added jogs into it all, then eventually running. Building strength is the best way to avoid long term injuries. Eating to support this level of exercise is THE most important thing. When I was running 45-55 min 6 days a week, heavy weight training every 3rd day I was eating a protein level goal each day of 175-200 grams. This is not easy to do, it was a constant eat, then drink process. But the goal was worth it for me to get to this level which I'd never been at in my entire life. the amazing and coolest thing about this surgery is that it gives you the chance to do things you'd never have been able to do otherwise. Make a goal, work hard towards it!! It's totally worth it. i'm back at square one and having to start over kind of from the middle as I've not lost a lot of my fitness but a lot of the strength. go figure. Plus I have to be so careful now because of the injury I sustained from the assault. Running again has been my goal and I'm getting there each week is an achievement for me and it's wonderful!

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I was told to move right away and they had me up and walking in the hospital. I did a bit at home and then by 2 weeks post op I got clearance to do light exercise and started walking. Slowly over time I uped it to 3 or 4 miles a day. And now I go to teh gym and do the eliptical and treadmill and etc.....No problems what so ever for me. If anything I have so much more energy. The water issue is that you cant jug the water. But I still bring a water bottle to the gym with me an sip on it. so I would say your goal of running in 5 years is very realistic. Good luck with things. |
