Just begining the whole lap band process- still tryingt o get approval from insurance co, etc.
My biggest fear is that I'll lose the weight, but somehow manage to gain it back! That is, afterall, my track record with every known diet program in the world! And I have seen people (Al Roaker for one) who have had the surgery, lost weight, then gained it back! Read an article that said less than 20 % kept the weight off for 10 years- not such good outcomes!
I know it all has to do with lifestyle & habit changes, but I used to think it was failsafe. Now I'm afraid of yet another failure- and a big one at that. I have no confidence in myself anymore.
What are your thoughts? Did anyone else have this fear?

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Hi there. I really dont think not one of us can say we are not worried that we wont gain it back. This surgery will really open your eyes into what you should be eating and the portion you should be eating. It has mine.

hi, i think we all feel that way no matter which weight loss method you use. nothing is a cure all.it all requires a lot of work...i wish there was a magic pill, but there isn't.WLS is a great tool but not a cure.having no faith in ourselves is normal.so far i'm happy with my progress and would do it again.i think al roaker is still way down from where he was.research, research, research, then make a choice.good luck!

I wonder what the real catalyst is in permanent weight loss. Has anyone done any long term studies to determine what the exact "magic bullet" is? I know I hope it is in a 'changing of the mind' that has been an evolution of the person I am becoming, sort of like a butterfly that never goes back into the cocoon and never becomes a worm again because they're just different now. (The butterfly has become my personal icon of my new life )

Summary of two long term studies reported in the New England Journal of Medicine this summer.
http://www.asbs.org/Newsite07/resour...ermstudies.pdf

The *magic bullet* is changing your attidute and relationship with food, learning alternate coping skills that are not harmful to you, but rather, help your maturity and serenity. The *magic bullet* is setting up healthy eating habits and healthy life style.
So, yes, the *magic bullet* is "in the 'changing of the mind' " as you say.
So, it takes a lot of work, a lot of effort and a lot of time.
From time to time, you'll find yourself getting off track. If and when you do, don't beat yourself up over it, don't feel guilty, just pick yourself up. dust your hands off, and start again from where you left off. Everyone has these moments.

((((((HUGS)))))) May your journey go well.

My mother in law recently asked..."How long will you have to adhere to such a strict diet?"

My response, "...the rest of my life!!!"

There's no way in HELL I have come this far to go back to my old habits (that got me where I was in the first place).....This REALLY is a life change, and I think TOTAL committment to that fact is the key!

hi. i think we all fear failure because we have failed so many times before. i think the first part to success is aknowledging that whatever method you choose is a "tool". it is not the answer, or magic, or a bullet. sure you will lose weight faster than you probably ever have in life before, but maintaining it is the key.

you are not alone and have found a great place for support. welcome. and good luck on your journey

i agree with everyone. we all have this fear. it is what we do with it that matters.there is no absolute in life, but you can strive for the very best. nobody is perfect. but you have to recognize those moments and do your best to make it better the next time.

Thanks so much to all of you!
Yes- I have found a great place for support and Thanks for the welcome and well wishes!
I feel like I'm taking my first 'baby steps'- like starting a new life all over.
That's just it- I want to make sure I do it right this time. I'm 45 years old & want to start living- not just existing in my fat misery.
I'll be around- lurking and learning from all of you- probably with many more 'stupid' questions!
Thanks again!

I didn't know that Al Roaker had gained some weight back. Does anyone know how much? My doctor said many people gain back a small percentage and then level off. Could this be what he has done, or was it a significant amount?
