Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I have no personal history with blood clots, but blood clots alone are a complication of surgery because anytime you are off your feet and inactive for a period of time, blood clots can form, i.e., on a surgery table or even a long airplane ride. That is just one of the reasons they get you up walking as soon as possible, because the longer you are in bed and inactive, the more chance you have of developing a clot.

Often in a long surgical procedure if you are going to be "bed-ridden" they give blood thinner medication and you will wear TEDS (thromboembolic disease stocking) or SCDs (sequential compressive devices) to prevent deep venous thrombosis (clots).

I would imagine that if you have a history of this, it would be considered a comorbidity as you might be more prone to it. However, I'm not sure if you are at less of a risk if you have a filter or not, or just less chance of a problem from a DVT since you already have the filter in place.

Blood will be monitored with blood tests (PT= prothrombin time and INR=internationalized normalized ratio) because these tests can be used to evaluate bleeding and clotting tendencies and they can determine if you need to be anticoagulated or not.

Sometimes people are anticoagulated and/or wear the special stockings after surgery routinely, but these are stopped once they are up and around.

Anyway, I don't have any personal history and I don't know that I answered your question - plus I started off on a tangent. Sorry.

I hope people respond though, as this is an interesting question.

I know a few people who had the filter placed prior to surgery. Better to be safe then sorry. I am actually the opposite. I have a low platlet count and platlet dysfunction. In other words I needed to have blood ready for a transfusion ready just in case I bled to much. Good luck . Only your surgeon and docs know whats best. If they look at your history and feel you need it then I am sure its for the best. The people who I know had it had no complications from it and no side effects and are doing wonderful now.

Good luck
