Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Hi all - haven't been on for a while do to computer problems. I'm really starting to wonder about this surgery. I consume 700-1000 a day (I keep a log to keep me on track ) and am only loosing 2-3 pounds a week. Is this normal. Seems to me that with that low of calories and bypass function, I should be loosing more. I'm 7 weeks out and have lost 30 lbs. That doesn't seem right! ![]()

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | HIYEEEEE! i think you are doing fine. of course i am not a dr and cant even begin to explain the whole calorie expectation thing. i believe you are fine with the # as long as its under what it takes to "maintain" your current weight. Im sure doc will explain lol. one day at a time though. 2-3 lbs a week is 2-3 lbs more than pre-op. go with it!!make sure you are getting your fluids and your protein and stick to your dr's plan and you wont be disappointed. |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | The "Normal" is to lose 50% of your excess weight in the first 6 months, 25% in the next 6 months, and the rest in the following 6 months to a year. So figure out how much over the "normal" weight you are, and then divide it in half, and divide that by 6 months to find out how much you should be losing a month. For example: I'm 5'4" and should weigh 130. I started at 233 so I was overweight by 103 pounds. Divide that in half is 50 - so I should lose 50 pounds in the first 6 months or about 8 pounds a month = 2 pounds a week. I've actually lost about 12 pounds a month so I'm ahead of the plan, even though it seems like I'm hardly losing. |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | You ladies are wonderful and so so supportive. Several people I work with told me I need to eat more because with the bypass function and 700-1000 calories a day my body is fighting to hold on to everything it can. So I said ok I'll try going up to 900-1200 for 2 days and see what happens. WALA.........got on the scale this morning and another 2 lbs are off. That make 5lbs for the week. I think I might try eating my 700-1000 5 days a week and then go to 900-1200 for 2 days. It's really hard to get that many calories in but if it works I can do it. I ate cashews to help get the count up, at least nuts are junk. Doc if you wanna comment, please do. My doctor advised me to be very careful because calories add up quicker then we think. I log everything so I'm safe on that point. I got disturbing news yesterday. Seems the 2 disc under the one I had fused in 2000 are not ruptured. My orthopedic could see it in a regular xray. He's sending me back to the neuro surgeon. I'm very upset and depressed over this. I'm going to hang in there as long as I can manage the pain. Any and all prayers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all - Merry Christmas!

| Super Moderator | 2-3 lbs per week means 8-10 lbs per month. If you lost on an average 8 lbs per month for 12 months, you will have lost 96 lbs. If you lost 10 lbs a month for 12 months, you will have lost 120 lbs. Your sticker says you need to lose 90 lbs. So, as far as the speed of your weight loss, it is averaging just about right. Never forget, how long it took for you to go up the weight where you needed surgery, how long you were at a high weight. It is not going to come off over night, even with surgery, even though you want it off yesterday. When you look back a year from now, though, it will seem to you as if your weight had come off in a flash. Such is the human nature. I think it's very important for everyone to keep in mind what BreeChick said in another thread. Quote:
Patience and perseverance is the key to success with this surgery. Both pre op in getting insurance approval, and post op in acheiving your goal, and maintaining that throughout your life.

| Super Moderator | Don't count your calories now, you are still only under 2 months out. Most people seem to be able to eat only up to 800-900 calories around your time. Concentrate on getting in the 60g or whatever amount of protein your surgeon has instructed, and on getting in 64oz or whatever amount of water you surgeon has instructed you to get. Don't let the extra food into your diet, these may lead you to crave and graze. Concentrate on not drinking and eating at the same time. Concentrate on learning the "full" feeling, stopping there, and the true "hungry" feeling, as you need to learn these to keep you on track for life. Your weight will come off at a comfortable and safe pace for YOUR body. This speed will be uniquely yours. So, don't worry about how much isn't or is coming off. You also need to remember that there will be periods when your scale will not move, because your body is adjusting to your new plumbing and your new weight. Once it's done with the adjusting, your scale will start moving again, but when the scale stops is when your inches melt. Also, when it comes to food and what to do and what not to do, don't listen to the people at work unless they also are gastric bypass patients. Listen to what your surgeon and nutritionist says, everything else is just noise, unless it is from someone who knows what exactly goes on with bypass surgery. If you listen to those around you, no matter how well intentioned they are, it may throw you off track. If anything you hear from others that you want to give a try, ALWAYS check it out with your surgeon, or with whomever dr or PA who has been put in charge of looking after you post op by your surgeon. (((((HUGS))))) May your journey go well.
