Question Colonoscopy Experiences. Be Honest, Please

Don't sugarcoat your answer to my query.

I am scheduled for my colonoscopy on Tuesday, 1) because I am 50, and 2) part of the bariatric workup. The ONLY bad experience I heard regarding the procedure itself was from another obese woman, who had to "wake up" to roll around for the procedure because the doc was having a hard time getting the tube around a corner. Of course by then the patient was feeling the discomfort of it all, and she said she would never have it again.

I don't know anywhere else I could go to get an honest answer from others who may have had a colonoscopy when >250 lbs.

Thanks in advance. BTW, no, I don't intend to cancel the procedure...I just want to know what to expect.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I had it done a little over a year and I had no problems what so ever. I had no pain either and they put me under during the procedure and I did not feel anything. The doctor even took 3 palops out that I had. I would do it over in a heartbeat just to put my mind at ease. The big thing is early detection can save your life.

I have had two of these done. One 10 years ago. I was awake for the whole thing. I swore at that time I would never have it done again. I had 5 polyps removed. My PCP talked me into it again. The last time was a breeze. I fell asleep before i knew anything was going on and woke up and was ready to go home. I didnt even have the horrible gas pain from before. They have come a long way with this procedure. The worst part is the prep for it. AKA the stuff you have to drink or consume before hand.

So i didnt sugar coat it. I went in took a nap and come home that is how easy it was for me the last time.

I havent had it done yet, but I'm in the medical field so I talk to a lot of people and most say the dread and prep was the worst part (kinda like our surgeries!!) I havent talked to anyone who would refuse it, although a lot put it off the first time! Hang in there, it'll be over soon!

I'm having one Wednesday for the exact same reasons. My boyfriend and a friend of mine both had one and said nothing to it - other than the nasty prep the day before and day of. The scheduler for the exam said the same thing - I won't feel a thing because of sedation, but the day-before prep isn't pleasant. So I'm not really worried any more. It is just the thought of it more than anything else.

I had a colonoscopy in August of this year and I was petrified - but I needn't have been.

I was awake for the whole procedure and as I was watching the TV screen, the doc was pointing things out to me. I even have some colour photo's! LOL

He found one tiny polyp which he removed but wasn't bothered by. Just said I should have another colonoscopy in 5 years instead of the recommended 10 just be on the safe side.

There was just one part of the process that I didn't like and that was the bowel prep stuff............ OMG! They gave me two gallon containers!

I ended up taking a good book into the bathroom with me.

OK. Thank you Kitty, Vickie, Clancy, Rachel and Corrine. I really appreciate your replies.

There would have been only one reason for me to not go in on Tuesday. I realized on Friday that I would have a half-gallon of that "GoLytely" or it's equiv when I was scheduled for my bariatric class. I called the person in charge of the classes and she said I could make it up in Jan. Whew! There is a 2 month booking time for colonoscopies. I guess that is better than the 1 year wait for the surgery. lol

Thanks again. I knew I would get the clear scoop with you guys.

No discomfort, just groggy the next day, went back to work, wont do that again. take the next day off. All I remember is my doc saying it was okay to pass gas and i was in a room with about 10 others and refused to, I am a lady, all i heard was blurpp blurrrpp blurppp, people didn;t care.

I had my first one done in April and it was fine. I was scared to death because I had heard so many different stories but I was just fine. Didn't feel a thing and they removed three polyps and I only had a little gas afterwards. You will be okay.

Well, I had it this morning. I won't get into the way too long time waiting for my turn, but once the Demerol and Verced was injected, the doc did his thing.

It was aborted half way thru the transverse colon because of my pain. I was told by some nurses that women who have had c sections or hysterectomies sometimes have pelvic adhesions that don't allow ample movement of the bowel. Every millimeter was very painful...He kept telling me to relax and I really really tried. When he finally said he was half way, I told him I couldn't tolerate all this for twice the time.

So now I have a barium enema scheduled for Jan. If something shows in that, he will do it again in a hospital under general anesthesia.

I knew I was special.
