Default Mammograms

I'm scheduled for my yearly mammo this week - wont that be fun - but I am curious if any of you had any changes due to your weight loss in regard to your results. They really compressed me into a pancake before and the results were that I had really dense breast tissue but since the deflating has begun Im curious if that affects the test or my results and also if they may get a better "view". Any thoughts?

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Hmm...most of the breast is fat, actually, so I wouldn't be surprised if they got a better "view" with your weight loss.

FINALLY! Something I can discuss with some sort of experience. LOL

I have been a mammographer for >30 years. Lots of bariatric post-surgery patients in my pool of patients.

Generally, I can tell if she has lost weight just by looking at her. Her hips are usually bigger than her bust (it is all that excess skin that hasn't either redistributed or been removed yet. In doing the exam, her skin is, um, puffier. If I have access to her old mammograms, there will definitely be a difference in breast size and sometimes I have to size down the film size. The patient generally does not complain any less or more for the experience.

Regarding digital...from the patient's perspective, there is no difference between a digital mammogram and an "analog", or film-screen mammogram. There is a slight higher "catch rate" for cancer with digital in women with dense breasts (radiographically...you can't tell if you are dense in that way by just a physical exam) under the age of 50.

Where I work, we no longer begin screening mammography of any kind before age 40 unless there is a high pre-menopausal breast cancer rate in the family. They found there were WAY too many mammograms being done between 35-40. It was a radiation issue, not a cost issue.

Speaking of radiation, please reconsider those implants, especially if you are under 50! There is emerging evidence that there will be a slightly higher breast cancer rate in women with implants >20 years, due to the extra radiation needed to image implanted breasts.

Thanks! *bows and steps down from her soapbox.*

PS. Campy...I will have your mammogram if you have my colonoscopy! how's that??? LOL

Judijo - got me! I think I'll wait my turn and hope there's good memory reducing drugs available by then, I will do it when it's time though -- it seems important, kinda like all the other stuff we have to do "pre-emptively" (is that a word?)
