Default A stupid question courtesy of my mom...

My mom & I were watching the show Big Medicine a couple weekends ago and she started asking some questions about the surgery. I'm currently waiting for insurance approval after being denied back in 1/06. Wish me luck with it! Anyway...my mom asked a stupid question but it couldn't have been that stupid because I didn't really have a logical answer to give her... She asked, "How does your body know when to stop losing weight?" I simply said, "It just does..." Can anyone explain it any better so I can pass this info on to my mom? Thanks! You guys are always a wealth of information!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Basically, it'a a matter of math.
Your intake equals your expenditure. That's when our body weight stays stable.
In other words, if you have a big body, you need to eat a lot to move the mass around. If you have a small body, you don't need that much to move the mass around.
For an average house wife, the amount of energy you need per day is around 10-14 kcals per lb. So, if you are a 130lbs person, you need about 1300 kcal, with the nutirents in good balance, of course, to maintain at 130 lbs.
What you eat post op is much lower than that at the beginning, and around the first year is out, will probably go up to 1000 kcal or so.

Now, our body is so geared that it will go into "starvation mode" when the intake is very low compared to what it needs. So, post op, while you are unable to eat much, and with the changed plumbing, absorb much, your body will go into starvation mode, trying to hang onto everything that comes in. The fact is, even with hanging on, it's not enough, so you still lose. However, there will come a point when the starvation mode equals the amount your are getting in, and that's what will finally stop your weight loss.

In truth, of course, it's more complicated than this, but to put it in a nutshell, that's what goes on.

it's always interesting when people ask that particular question. Some people seem to be under the impression as we get smaller and smaller that we'll just not stop losing...

It's great that the doc can explain the how's/why's of how we do settle out.

what I've seen over the last, wow..since end of year 2000, with people post op is they hit bottom, get really small and then go up sometimes around 20 lbs to 'settle' at a stable weight. This can be frustrating and confusing if you're not aware of this and often people freak thinking they are regaining weight.

Interesting post... How quickly do you feel those 20 pounds come back on? I'm glad you gave the "heads up."

Past 2 years, usually arouond 3 years or so.
So long as you keep to the "program", the way gastric bypass post ops are supposed to eat, you don't have to worry about your weight going up more than the 15-20 lbs that's considered normal..

anyone mind if i ask another question on top of this one?

so if the rebound is about 20 is it safe to lose an extra 20 in the honeymoon to prepare for the bounce back?

That might not be a good idea, Kenya. Just go along with where you settle. You probably will lose another 20 or so, but at the same time, that will put you at around 140, which for your height is on the lower end of normal range BMI. Your best balance is probably at around 150 or so lbs, healthwise. You may go below 140 without trying to, and if you do, then after a few years, go back up to 150 and stay there, you'll be at where it's best for you.

You need to keep in mind, "thin" does not necessarily mean healthy. I've been reading up on some data that's be published recently, which shows that long term, low BMI can compromise your health, just as high BMI does. Though the normal BMI range is 24.9-18.5, from what I've seen personally, between 23-21 seems to be the best place to be, for most people where overall health is concerned.
