Question This has me wondering....

I just got over a 24 hour bout with an intestinal virus. Vomiting, diarrhea--ugh. I'm pre-op, but it has me worried. Has anyone who's been thru surgery had something like this? Since the pouch is so small and would hold very little, do you get dry heaves? I felt like I was losing my socks. Sorry to be so graphic, but after being so sick it is on the top of my list of stupid questions.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

funny you should ask, I was getting ready to post about this very same thing in coffee talk. I just got done with what I think was a bug since my allergies haven't been an issue this week and I have been careful in my eating. The first time I puked with it wasn't dry heaves, but the next time was. It was actually at my doctor's office that I had the dry heaves. One thing I noticed was the taste seemed different with this bug throwing up than before when it has been due to allergies or adjusting to new habits. I also threw up this afternoon, but I think that I got some bad deli meat and that was why today. Overall I would say that I am sick and tired of puking personally, but if this is the price that I have to pay for my results, I am willing to pay it tenfold. Puking sucks but you learn to cope and deal with it and concentrate on the other ways you feel sooooo much better in life. It is a balancing out thing and many people never have the whole puking issue, so you may get lucky. I hope that helps with your answer...oh and by the way...I was freaked out when I realized how much I could puke up post op, so don't worry kay? If you start to puke often and regularly affer surgery contact your surgeon because you may have a stricture, but there are also other reasons that can cause it. Best of luck.

Well, the stomach produces a lot of juice on its own, though the part of the stomach you have "intact" is the portion that produces less, so other than what you ate, that'll come up, too. Yes, you may have dry heaves and foamies and things for other reasons, but once you can figure out what causes them, you'll learn to avoid whatever.
As Janae says, there's the matter of choice, here, like it or not. Life asks to be taken on its own terms, even with the smallest of matters, and I'm sure you have the wisdom and strength to make the right choices for you.

Well i had a rought bout with the stomach virus in DECEMBER to the point my surgeon and regular PCP made me see a gastro doctor. OF course months after i realized that the virus going around this year was one that lingered so now i dont know if the new pouch caused it...

FIRST what happened was my regular PCP told me i was cheating on my surgery...which made me made i didnt loose at that point 100 lbs by eating wrong. NOR would i waste his time if i was eating sweets....SO needless to say he pissed me off......

MY surgeon more less said go to a gastro doctor i know it was rough and i even got a bit dehydrated at one point. IT lasted two weeks, i was going out of my mind thinking i was lactose intolerant...changeing what i was eating and no help!

BUT finally it eased but i kept the appointment to with the gastro doctor so that i was established with one should i need it again. HE said with my new plumbing, smaller stomach less juices...its going to be normal for it to take a little longer to rid then others. SO i am prepared for the future.

I just know that later i learned everyone had the bug LONG i was just one of the first to have this strain that went on long...go figure!
BUT post ops need to be sure even with a virus like that to keep that water intake up......dehydration feels horrible as i learned and i forced my fluids in the rest of the time with the bug.

THAT was my first experience with a stomach virus post op and i was about 6 months out.

Yes, Lisa's right. You have to take extra care not to dehydrate, when both the front door and the back door are malfunctioning. Lots of ppl, even non-ops, make the mistake of not taking fluids during such times and ending up with dehydration severe enough to need IVs. Bypass post ops are more susceptible to dehydration due to the altered plumbing, so you have to be all the more careful. However, consider this a part of the post op life style that you must adopt, changing your habits to more health oriented habits compared to before.
I hope this makes sense to you.

Thanks everyone, I'm finally able to get off the couch today, so feeling better. I am aware that some foods or the way that they are eaten could cause vomiting and you just have to learn what you are sensitive to. I assume that once you get rid of whatever you ate that caused you to vomit, the problem would be over, right? It would be different circumstances with a virus though, and could go on for quite some time. Thanks for the help.

I know for me when im sick from a meal that didnt sit right it goes away ...rather quickly now...but i know a few times early post op
i got sick for a few hours from something i ate that didnt sit
well....CHINESE takeout did that to me ....also
but i believe DUMPING from a sugary food could last a few hours!
SO i think at times its hard for us to tell! BUT we get thru it. USUALLY
i learn if i have a stomach virus when another family member starts
to get the malfunctions as well!!!

What timeing, Yesterday was my 1 month anniversary for my surgery and I was having an egg with my grandaughter for breakfast. We just share one. Well she went home and after about an hour and half i felt as though that egg was still sitting at the bottom of my throat, and it wasn't long that it come up.
That was my first time at up-chucking!!! Not good, I got really shaky and cold. But nothing else., I really think I was just more scared than anything.
I did drink alot after that, and later on had to eat something, I was so afraid of it happening again, but it was just fine.
Lisa dehidration is a funny odd feeling, and quite scary. I went through that as well. SF popcycles seem to help me right away. I keep some at work in the event I get that feeling later in the afternoon.
I will try to be extra careful to keep from any intestinal bugs, I know eventually it will catch up with me. NEVER FUN...............

Good info, ROBBIN (:

(((HUG)))) ROBBIN i am sorry the egg put you thru that. I have heard from alot of people eggs give many grief when first tried...i been okay with them.
ITS very hard to figure out at times what makes our pouches "GROUCHIE"
i sometimes (even a year out) cant figure mine out! I just follow my rules
A product i kept on hand early on cause i knew i was a fast eater/ and not a good chewer...so i feared having food get stuck early out...so i heard that papaya enzyme helps should something get stuck. I never took it but
kept it on hand...i have also heard meat tenderizing products work too.
I did get food stuck twice and thats a unique feeling as well when u feel the piece go down and stop then u cant eat more ...tossing up for me
freed it but others arent as lucky.

YES Robbin dehydration is a weird feeling and im certain that bout of the bug i had in december i was hehydrated, i closed my daycare, which i NEVER due and when i looked in the mirror my lips were white as a ghost.
OF course being medically everyone seemed to have it in their heads i was
eating bad foods and getting sick i combated my problem alone and got in the fluids ....

again hugs that you experienced this! AND sometimes we dont know if it is a virus or our pouches just know when you go thru things were here post and will help get everyone thru any little obstacles!
