Default A question I forgot to ask the surgeon!!

Hello All,

I went to meet with the surgeon this past Friday and got to schedule my surgery!!! January 9th..Just a few weeks away!! WOOHOO!! I even got to meet some people in the waiting room who all had positive experiences and made me really comfortable with my decision to go ahead and get the gastric bypass done instead of the lapband. Anyhow...i asked my surgeon many questions but forgot to ask this one. Maybe some of you know the answer to it. I was wondering what a draining tube is?? Does everyone have one? I only know about them from people writing about them on here. if anyone knows any info about this I'd appreciate some info!!! Thanks!!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Wink It's Ok, I promise!!

With my G-B surgery, I had three drain tubes kinda arranged in a triangle around my incision. They are straw looking flexable tubes that have a small apple sized pouch on the end that collects all the blood and junk that seeps out of you after surgery. The ones that I had were really long and felt really wierd when they pulled them out. They are generally left in until the day that you leaving the hospital. They do not hurt and they are put in after your knocked out so you never really have any discomfort from them until they pull them out. Now, when they pull them out you are awake and you can watch them do it. It feels very wierd, kinda like a snake moving through your body. My wife and I joked that it was like one of the magic tricks when they pull the different colored hankerchiefs out of the hat it just kept going and going. Mine were about 2 feet long. To be honest it didn't hurt it was just really wierd and hard to explain. My advise is worry more about the first time that you get up and feel your organs go back into place cuz of gravity, now that is F'n WIERD!!!! If you have any more questions let me know I am very happy to help you and I have been thru it all, trust me!!!! Big Wylly Out!!!! E-mail me at wyllyyarber@hotmail.com

Mine were probably 4" +/-, didnt really feel them, no big deal. Yeah, it feels kinda weird when they take them out but mine were quick and painless. No biggie. Good luck - welcome!

I came home with one and had it for a week. It is not painful, more irritating than anything. I kept mine pinned to my binder and wore lose shirts. When I showered I pinned in to a dish towel around my neck. Had to empty it a couple times a day. It felt weird, not painful, when he pulled it and I had to wait for the hole to close up as he didn't steristrip it or anything.

The drains that you are referring to are called jackson pratts or jp's for short some people call them grenades also they are temporary and just to get rid of extra drainage to aid in the healing process .no biggie some say it hurts a little and some don't feel anything justincase ask for pain medicine prior they only take a second to pull out just a snip of a stitch and done i see it done daily
if not used the extra drainage would just be left there to absorb on its ownand may cause infection i guess some doc use them for this and some don't and if you have them and see clots in them thats normal due to blood and it may look just like blood clear yellow drainage so don't be alarmed if you go home with them and they change color unless it becomes a funky cloudy looking file smelling stuff that is a sign of infection

A (or a few) drain tube is what others have essentially said.
It's put in when they have finished the surgery and are closing you up. The surgeon will pull out the instruments inserted through the various incisions he/she's made, then put the drain tubes in their place to make sure the blood and fluids that will seep out until the wounds have closed on the surface can come out, and not build up within your abdomen. Depending on how your surgery goes, and how much bleeding you have, you may have none to drains in all your incisions.

I had one drain tube amd it was about 2 feet lng and it did not hurt, and they do pull it out before I went home.It does feel "weird",but mine was used also to see the results of a test they called "the blue popscicle testz'. You eat a blue popc,l and they see if blue comes out in the drain and if not u have no leaks. It was He*l to eat a popsicle twoo days out,but I was glad to see no blue........................Kathy
