Exclamation Pre-Op Dieting Question

I am trying to lose some weight while waiting on my approval for surgery. I just started using Slim Fast shakes for breakfast and lunch yesterday. I have noticed that my stomach seems to be upset after drinking them (diarrhea). Has anyone else had trouble like this? I'm not sure if it's just my body trying to adjust, or if it is something that will continue. Any advice would be great. Thanks!!!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

i personally
pre op and post op
HATE slim fast shakes.

I was required to loose weight pre op
and i followed atkins induction and did very well.
THE good thing about this choice was i got my
carb craviings and addictions in control
prior to surgery one less symptom post op
to have withdrawals!
good luck

I'm on medifast shakes right now. I get 5 a day (and that's it!), only chocolate or vanilla - and none of it is by choice, my dr requires it. The first few days I was nauseous and that what helped me through because I didn't even want the shakes I got, I would have preferred to starve. I never did get diarrhea though. After the first week, my stomach got used to them and now I just deal with it and every shake brings me one step closer to my surgery (and I've lost 15 lbs in 2 weeks)! Good luck, losing weight pre-op, whether dr required or not, is never a bad idea!

I'll use up what I have left and see if it gets any better. The first few drinks are aweful! I put them over ice, so by the time I'm about half done they don't seem quite as bad. I may try the low carb thing too though. I know that when we get approval the doctor said I had to do the 2 week liquid diet, and 2 weeks post op. He said that the 2 weeks prior should help with the liver size. I'm just so ready to make this change in my life. I just want to feel normal, and not hurt all the time and be able to play with my daughter. They left me a message tonight, so I'm hoping that they are sending all the paperwork off for approval in the next week or so. *keeping my fingers crossed!*

Wow, how exciting! Even though I have my date, I'm not technically approved yet. Monday I go see my family doc to get her thumbs up (already saw her before I did anything to get her ok) and I've lost the 5% ins. requires, so as soon as they get her letter, all papers can go. The office says they respond in 24-36 hrs and they swear it'll be approved - they should know! How long do you think it'll take for them to respond? And how soon will you get a date? What flavors of slim fast are you trying? Maybe it'll get better, you never know. I never thought I'd stomach this cr-p! Good luck!!!!!

I've got strawberry and cappachino(?) right now. I'm going to try different flavors next time. I've done the chocolate before and it was okay, I'm just not a big chocolate fan.

About the paperwork, I hope that they have finally received everything they need and that they were calling me yesterday to tell me they will be sending off for approval next week. As soon as they get the paperwork the insurance company said it usually takes the about 2 weeks to hear back from them. The doctor said he schedules the surgeries for a couple of weeks after the approval date, sooo... If I get an approval by the middle of January, I could be in surgery by the end of January or beginning of February. I'm so excited!

If you read the ingredients label on slim fast it has a lot of corn syrup which really can cause diarrhea for a lot of people pre and post op. There are so much better protein drinks to use than slim fast...it's just a high promo-ed one so it's what we think of.

Low Carb protein drinks are better for you because they won't have all that sugared stuff in them.

My four day liquid diet before surgery and I have a fair amt of options on what to drink. Actually let me look here cause I got a print out this week from my NUT. Wow come to find I am lucky here. It is a general protein supps, water ect and thin cream of wheat or rice No sugar yogurt low fat choc milk..lol sugar free ice pots and light ice cream. and there are a few other things there. But I think this wont be that hard. Perhaps you can call your surgeon and tell him that you cant tolerate the slimfast and perhaps go to something more whey oriented. I drink slim fast on occasion but not often at all it is yucky to me. I like carnation sf instant breakfast if I have a choice.
