Why exactly do we have to chew our food so much post op. Is it because something could get stuck or are there more reasons? Just curious

One of the most important jobs of the stomach is to churn and grind food and make it softer and also mix it with the digestive juices from the stomach and prepare the food for the next stage of digestion.
With only a small pouch, the pouch can't do this important job. So, instead of your pouch churning and grinding, you have to chew chew chew to get the food soft enough for the next stage.

You may feel "over" full and for me that is painful..... Chewing alot is also supposed to be part of our life changes as to slow down the whole eating process along with a smaller plate, putting fork down between each bit, while u chew, not eating in front of the TV,etc....... As for not enough chewing it gives the same feeling as eating too fast. hope this helps Kathy

It hurts or comes back up. You will know when you didn't chew well enough because that stuff hurts and it moves real slow going down. I know sometimes I wish could just stick something down my throat to move it down faster....lol

If I do not chew my food small enough it wants to come back up and I get this feeling in my throat that it is on it way up. I hate to throw up so I try not to. It only happened to me twice where I did not chew it up good enough and it tried to come back up and I just tried not to throw up and it went threw but that hurt. I found out that I have to concentrate on chewing when I eat. We had guests for a meal one time and I was so busy talking and forgot myself and did not chew it up good enough and swallowed it and I got that feeling, so I ran out to the garage becasue if I had to throw up I was going to run outside. I did not want my family to hear me throw up in the bathroom and that is why I ran out to the garage. I guess I am very self concious about the throwing up part. Even if they know that can happen very easily. My son came out after me and wanted to make sure I was ok.
