Question Nervous

I have a little issue. My husband's cousin had gastric bypass surgery in March of 06. I just found out about it and started emailing her to get some info on the whole thing. She asked what Doctor I was going to and before I could answer, she wrote she would advise against my going to Dr. Graber in Utica. Well, it just so happens I am going there. I then did a quick freak out and quickly emailed her back as to why she doesn't approve of him. I liked him when I went to the consultation. I thought he was very knowledgable and knew his stuff...

Should I be nervous? Should I look for a different doctor and start this whole process over again? I just don't know... Any insight would be good and I am not sure what to do...

Thanks!!!!!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

What was her reasoning for not liking him? Who did she have?

Find out her reason for not liking him. It could be just his bedside manners not very good. You can always look him up online to see if he had any complaints against him. Just ask her why she doesn't like him and make your judgement from there. If she says something like he doesn't know what he is doing or lots of people suing him, well I would say run for the hills.

My GYN that did my hysterectomy had the worse bedside manners. I had to drop her before my eight week check up with her. Then I found out that my cousin was going to her when she was pregnant. She is a good doctor so I didn't talk against her skills I just told my cousin about her bedside manners and you know what she found out the same thing.....lol

Ok, I just found out the reason. Her PCP wouldn't refer her, becuase he tries to push the surgeries through quick. He doesnt have good bedside manners and he isnt available to answer questions (which the PA told me that and said she would be there to answer questions)... so I am feeling much better now. I think I am safe and still good to go!!! Right?!?!?!

Tracy, put your mind at ease, if you haven't asked already - ask - what are his surgical statistics?

In my area, I had the choice of 2 surgeons with each practicing at a different hospital. Surgeon 1 had 2 deaths in 2004 from surgical complications (he volunteered this info during his information seminar and how he had taked steps to prevent them in the future) and practiced out of a hospital that looked run down to me. He had great bedside mannors and is loved by his patients.

Surgeon 2 practiced out of a hospital that is a level 1 trauma center and his statistics were way lower. His bedside mannor was brisk the first few times I meet with him, however he mannor is more warm now that he has gotten to know me.

Hope this helps. Laurie
Beside mannors are important, but surgical skills while poking around your major organs is more important to me.

Thanks Laurie! I asked him his stats when I first met him, he has had 1 death out of 1500 surgeries, the death was over 5 years ago. He has a 2% complication rate, so I am okay with that.

I think I am okay and still going ahead with my decision. Now I just wish I would get my exact date!!!

Well, I guess that's not too bad. I know lots of good surgeons that I work with that don't only have a bad bedside manner, but they have bad personalities in general!!! As long as you'll have someone who will be there to answer your questions and be supportive in his office. His stats sound pretty good.
I live in Hudson Falls, NY (near Lake George, about 1 hour north of Albany)

I'm sorry, but if I didn't have a good "all around" feeling about my surgeon, I'd find another one. Bedside manner is so important, you're so vulnerable and needy post surgery. My doc calls, well, the one time, it wasn't a big deal, you shouldn't be made to feel bad if you have questions.

Hey,I agree,if you don't feel the whole picture is ok with what you want than research elsewhere. I did research for 13 months before choosing my surg. I was very scared and wanted to be as sure as I could....I live 20 mins.outside Buffalo and I had 3 choices of surgeons, and feel that I made the best choice.Dr. Caraunna, whom I chose, has his own wing in Sisters Hosp.,has his own staff on that wing, has super bedside manners,and....I am very happy with my post-op care. Just wanted to share my experience with you, hope it helps. Kathy
