| Spiritual Side to Surgery
As a Christian I have struggled with having this surgery. Has anyone else had this issue? I feel like if I had prayed more, focused on God more, that I would have beat my food addiction the "natural way". I even tried the Christian weight loss program called Weigh Down, and obviously did not succeed! So, how have others come to terms with the spritual side of this surgery? So many people say you have to deal with underlying issues of why you are obese, and after a year of therapy and a lot of soul searching I didn't seem to have any major underlying issues. I had a lot of bad habits, and liked to celebrate with food. Behavior modification was a help, but I know I couldn't have done it all without the surgery....but then I am reminded Christ said we can do all things through Him! I am not sure what to think.

I think there are NO accidents in God's world...everything happens for a reason and EXACTLY the way it's supposed to....it's all HIS plan, we just live here...if He wants you to have the surgery, you will.....

Yes with god all things are possible, but I also beleive God has doctors in his plan too and all those other people that help people. I do think when people go to far with things, god will put a stop to it. Like kathy said that everything happens for a reason. I beleive God had my surgery in his plan becasue I tried so many diets and nothing worked and this surgery is my miracle from God. I had a wonderful ansthesealogist that came to my room that I was waiting at with my family. He talked about everything to me and my family and hoping I keep my little stomach in check and hope I do not stretch it like lots of people have done and they came back for another gastric bypass. He has said that some come back as many as three times for the gastric bypass just the fact they did not watch what they ate and overate themselves and really stretched their stomachs. So just before he went into the operating room he asked me if I mind if he says a prayer for me and I told him I would be so grateful to him for a prayer and me and my family and him all held hands and said a prayer before they wheeled me down to the operating room. I found out later from the nurses that I had for me, that he is the only one that will say a prayer to patients and I was so lucky to have him come to my room and I believe God lead him to my room and to be my ansthesealogist.
So I do believe God has a plan for all of us.

i struggle with religion generally speaking but i will say that i do pray a lot more for strength and what not post op. i also give thanks at the end of the day for making it thru it. i believe we were all brought to "this place" for a reason. be it to touch eachothers lives in some way or share. i am trying not to question things so much but to just pray that im doing the right thing. i dontknow if that makes any sense being that i have no formal religious background. i do feel somewhat closer now though...

I too believe that God has doctors in his plan too. HE blessed these doctors with the know-how to help us.

I am not what the world would call a good christian, I have slipped many times, don't go to church like I use to but I do believe God knows our heart. He knows those that love Him. I also know God knows how much I wanted a healthy temple-unfortunately He knows my flesh is weak--so I know He made all of this possible for each one of us to have great doctors and a surgery to help save our lives.

This is a really important issue for me. I had to be right with God before I had the surgery. I went to the altar the Sunday before surgery and gave it all to Him. That was such a comfort for me. The last thing I did before I was wheeled away was pray with my mother. I also had scripture that I made her hold on to for me. I never though that if i had been a stronger believer, I would have lost the weight without surgery. I just knew that God had placed this opportunity in my life, this qualified surgeon, and the comfort I had knowing that my life was in His hands and the capable hands of my surgeon was enough. My pastor was such a great support; my entire church. The first thing I did when I woke up was thank Him. Don't think not losing weight without surgery makes you a weak Christian, He makes all things possible.

After all this time and reading so many posts where people have struggled with this same question...my thoughts on this one are still conflicted.
To me this surgery is no different than any other surgery. It IS life changing, no doubt!! It gives life back. But to lay SO much upon the surgery itself as something spiritual disturbs me.
We have to stop the self blame and self doubt and stop the inner 'voices' that say I should have been stronger, more 'right with God, more...(fill in the blank). Where we are is right where you are. Plain, simple.
I have no doubts that each day I AM where God wants me to be.
The surgery is just another surgery fix for something that is wrong with the BODY. What we do after the surgery is where the spiritual fix comes in. That's when we discover all the things we were putting first INSTEAD of
God.
