| Working with God to change my life one day at a time
Please do not read if spelling errors drive you crazy. I am a terrible speller, and did not spell check this.
Over the last six years I have had a very interesting life.
I applied for and was denied life insurance. I was putting out too much protein in my pee. So I went to my doctor and asked about it, they did some tests. He sent me to another doctor and they did more tests. He sent me to a nephrologist, and he did MANY test and a biopcy of my kidneys. After about 9 months I was diagnosed with a rare form of a rare kidney disease. It is usually fatal, and with its progression already I should be able to make it about 2 years. This was shortly after my second child, Samantha, was born, and my son turned 2. (I am sure you can see why I wanted life insurance).
This was six years ago today.
This was terrible news and it took time to set in. I worked with a great doctor, and decided to make things right in my life. I was going to follow every rule, take every drug. I was going to go to church more often, teach my children all that I can about the right way to live, get my wife ready to re marry.
One of the most aggressive parts of my treatment was MASSIVE doses of predisone. 120 mg/daily for better than a year. I used this while on other drugs for high blood pressure, high chelostrol, and the other drugs for my kidneys and the side effects of those drugs. On average I took 18-22 pills a day. It was at this time that I could not stop eating. I went from 240-260 to 375 lbs. in one year.
I also learned to trust God. To pray with my kids, to teach them about the right and wrong ways to live. My son said "yes sir" and "no ma'am" at 4, both of my kids knew to hold the door for someone else, and to say hello to others. My wife learned whom to call when the pilot light went out, where the important papers were kept, what it meant to have a living trust, and why it was important. I was preparing to die, and praying to live.
As my walk with Christ became closer, my numbers got better. I do not believe that God used my disease to get me to walk closer with him, but if he did, it worked.
When my disease went into remission, my nephrologist told me I needed to get this surgery. He told me what he had hoped, that if we could get me into a normal weight range that my disease may never come back. That it may have been broght on by obeisty and drug use (I was overusing pain medication for a year about two years before I was diagnosed). And now that I no longer take NASIDs and if I could lose the weight quickly enough I might be ok.
I did not tell my wife and kids.
This is when we started going to chuch even more often (did you know you can go more than once a week?). We got involved with the chuch more often. And I started to get more involved with the kids' life. I have been busy everyday since. Helping with Cub Scouts, teaching my daughter how to kick a soccer ball, showing my wife how to change a tire and oil in her car.
I have had 5 blood, pee tests with my nephrologist since 4/12/11 (my surgery). And during the last visit, he sat me down, put his hands on my knees and told me I was cured.
After I cried so long he had to leave and come back (the man does have other patients) (please note, I have cried three times since I was 12 at the birth of my kids, and when I got married). He explained my future and my past to me:
I will forever have reduced capacity due to the damage already done to my kidneys. The damage is unlikily to every continue. I will not need diyallisis, transplant, drugs, or other treatment. I am healed.
Then he told me what I was up against.
Less than 50% of people who have what I do respond to any treatment of any kind.
Less than 10% are diagnosed in time for any treatment to work properly
Less than 1 % are ever cured
When he first sat down with my the numbers were so bad, he thought he was being optimistic with saying that I had 2 years.
I know that the doctor is wonderful, dedicated, and hard working. I know the drugs were powerful and effictive. I know that none of this would have happened with out the Lord looking down upon me and bestowing me Grace.
Does God work in us, Yep.
We do not always see it, we may not always share it, but he does. This is the first time I have ever shared this much of my story, but I had a feeling it might help someone. If it does then God Bless you.
I have learned many things about myself over the last six years. Some good, some bad. But what I have found is that the right way to live is not just for teaching my kids. It is for me also. I love going to church. I enjoy the respect I get for giving it. I hope for the future, and feel sad for the past. What was a "hail-mary pass" has become a way of life for me and my family. My life is better not because I have lost so much weight, and that I am losing more. It is better because of the prayers, the love, and the hope that has consistantly been a part of me. I do not intend to change that.
The walk is not easy, but nothing worthwhile is.
