I have had a set back and I am so depressed now that I cant seem to shake this feeling I have. I had to have emergency surgery on Sept 22. They found that I had three perforted bowels due to scare tissue from my gallbadder surgery almost 18years ago. Well after 7 days in ICU and two in step down I was allowed to come home. It has been a struggle to get back my diet or getting my appitite back. I have very little engery. I am so tired of feeling tired. Everyone one says that I have been threw alot and it will just take time to get my engery level back.. I guess is true what they say," the older you get the longer it takes to bounce back". I just want to feel like me again and get things back on track here at home. Does anyone have any suggestion?

I had to have emergency bowel surgery 3 weeks after my RNY. I was in the hospital for nine days. I was also off my anti-depressant for those nine days and by the time I got home I was weepy and very depressed. It does get better. I know you are probably tired of people telling you that you just went through two major surgeries and your body needs time to heal. I really didn't start feeling really good until about five or six weeks after the second surgery. It wasn't that I was hurting too much, but just that blah feeling and all I did for 6 weeks is sit on the couch and watch the Food Network. But I needed that time and you do too. I am doing great now and can eat just about anything, (which I have to really watch now). So the moral of this story is, give it time, you will get your energy back. And you probably will lose that last 7 lbs you need to get to goal.

Denise,
Honey I had complications come up after my surgery. I had a adhesion decided to bleed and get infected. I had to have emergency surgery myself. This was two days after my bypass. This was September 27th my original date and Sept 30th for the emergency. I ended up spending 5 days in ICU myself. I to right now am still very weak. I have about 55 percent of my energy back. Im not really depressed but am a bit disappointed that I cant go and do like I thought I would. Little things I would do this time of year and still just cant yet. I cant go into Walmart without assistance of a wheelchair to make it through part of the store. I did this today. Im six weeks out and made it to the front of the store and looked at my hubby and he knew I was tuckered out. He grabbed a wheel chair just in time. Forget the automatic buggys they have for you to ride in. Im still not comprendeable enough to drive one. I cant drive a car yet per my surgeons orders.
I know im getting better but its just not fast enough sometimes. For me just being able to actually eat somthing again helped me alot. Somthing warm and hot. If you find the answer to getting well quicker let me know. LOL. I feel your pain I really do.

The best thing I can say is, yes, it does take time, so, just take it one day at a time.
If you are feeling really depressed, and you have been treated for depression before, meds for even a short while can help you, so maybe you should ask your PCP.
As for foods, for now, just get the protein and fluids in first, and then everything else if you can. You need protein first to heal, and to build up your body, so that comes first. Spending some time outside in the fresh air, even if it is sitting in a porch chair for a quarter of an hour, will also help you feel better.
Just relax, think of this as a resting time for yourself to store up the energy for your next step.
