UPDATE!!!!

I've decided to do this clinical trial. Upon further investigation...I've found out:

- If successful, this will actually be an outpatient procedure for future patients as it's far less painful than gastric bypass and much less expensive for the medical world to perform.

- Should the sutures pop, my stomach would go back to the whole size but should not cause any problems if they don't stick.

- If this isn't successful, it doesn't prevent me from having gastric bypass in the future.

- Only 20 people are being chosen for this study and I'm so happy to be one of them!

- I'll have to have an endoscopy during every visit (except for the one I have surgery). I'd love to comments on what the endoscopy is like!

- The clinical trial will last 12 months. I'll have a "screening" where they do a lot of the stuff they do while pursuing gastric bypass (nutrtion, psych, labs, etc...and they'll do an endoscopy in that visit). I'll have the surgery within 8 weeks of the screening (so by the end of June...yay!) and then visits at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months following the surgery, each of which I'll have an endoscopy.

- I won't have to do the liquid diet for the two weeks prior to gastric bypass. Two days is sufficient with this surgery.

- They don't re-route the intestines so I won't be dependent on vitamins the rest of my life -- this is one of the big pluses for me!

I think that sums it up. I'm super excited about getting the date for the screening. I'll keep you updated!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Thanks for the update, may this go well for you.
Please keep us in the loop and let us know how you are doing.
Also, if there a web site or page that has info on this? If the procedure works out, you will be one of the first ones to get it done, and first hand info coupled with the *official* info would be very nice and informative for those who may follow your route.

((((((HUGS))))) May your journey go well.

Yes please keep us updated. This is interesting. The Endoscopy is very easy. You go in they give you a med and then you wake up. You feel nothing. Its like going in to take a nap and then you leave.

Wow - what a blessing! Wishing you the best ~ you know every step of progress in medicine goes thru this step and it's so great you have this opportunity. Also, having a great surgeon and such a respected facility is great too! My doc was doing a study on the sutures when he did my RNY but I dont think I'll ever know which group I was in, they just report my progress and complications then I guess the study results are used to improve the RNY. I think it had something to do with smaller, closer suture line? Congrats

They've scheduled me for nutrition, psych, and an appointment with the surgeon for May 5th. They still need to schedule my screening for the lab stuff though. I'm getting so sick of seeing the shrink. After being denied three times this will be my fourth visit. "No, I still don't have an eating disorder and yes, I'm doing the surgery for the right reasons." Ha!
