Question deciding whats right for me

Hi,

While deciding what surgery is right for me I have been wondering what if I make the wrong choice????? That has led me into this question. What kind of surgery did you have and are you 100% happy with your choice or if you had to do it all over again would you choose differently?

I have been so set on bypass and lately as I am getting closer I have had alot of people trying to change my mind to lap band. Telling me how much the lap band has improved and how it is stitched into place to reduce chances of slippage, new improved bands, ect.. It has made me wonder if I am making the right choice. I have been thinking things like lap band is less invasive, reversible if needed, keeping the route more natural.... but then I think bypass would be less mantainece (fills), get better results, and if the band doesnt work like I want or need then would have to go back for bypass.....let me know what you all think. I would love to hear what your imput, Thanks!!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I had made my mine up to get the lap-band. I had two Dr.s tell me that in my case the R N Y would be the better choice, so I had it done in Sept of the year. It was the best choice I could have made. I am so happy I went with the bypass. The choice is up to you and every one is different. It is a big decision. I will never know if the lap band would have worked but one thing for sure what I choose sure is. good luck... dixie

I choose the gastric bypass, my doctor and nutrtionist all told me that I need something pernament to help me lose the weight and in the long run a better chance of keeping the weight off. What also made up my mind is that my daughter a year earlier had the gastric bypass and she was so successful and that really made up my mind. I also was at a support meeting before I had my surgery and this one lady came and talked to my daughter and later on I asked her, for having the surgery as long as she had that she sure did not lose very much and then my daughter told me that she had the lap band. That was another one of those times that I made up my mind to have the gastric bypass. I am so glad I had the gastric bypass and I have had not one single complication and I feel wonderful and I would do it all over again the same way. But you have to do what is right for you, I think there are a few that had the lap band are are doing really good but majority had the gastric bypass. You have to make the dicission that is right for you.

hello! I had the RNY. I had many people tell me not to do it or have the lap band instead but I honestly new how my mind and body work and if i had done the lap band i would have cheated it in every way possible. weather that be drinking milk shakes or what ever. I have yet to regret the dission i made to have the RNY done. Buy no means has it been and easy road i have delt with things i never thought i would ever have to. It is so much more then just a surgey to make me health or make me feel good this surgery has effected every aspect of my life. I am a year and 5 months out and I still am learning and finding things out about my self and the unerlying reasons to my obesity.
well i got side traced there a bit im sory but yes i love the fact that i chose the RNY and I do not at all regret my dission. But in the end no one else can make the dission but you good luck with what ever you chose im shore it will be the best choice for you.

I had RNY and wouldnt change a thing. Its been a long journey and one that I am very very happy with. Only regret is that I didnt do it sooner in life. I have a whole new life now and I feel so good.
I originally went in thinking lap band but then my surgeon went over stuff with me and I agreed with him that RNY was for me.

Good luck with your decision.

I need the added discipline RNY offered that the band didn't. I also loved the percentage of weight lost stats with RNY....it was higher than the band. My step sister had the band, and she's already had it removed and gained all her weight back. She did nothing but throw up all the time, and she was able to cheat constantly.

It's about doing TONS of research and deciding what the fit is for your goals.

What is your surgeon's input? Talk it over with him, as well as reading the replies.

I had the RNY. LapBand was not an option because:

1) Hub had a couple joints replaced with artificial joints and his body ended up rejecting the silicone and eventually "ate" the artificial joint and formed bone around it. As a mammographer, I see breast implants being encapsulated by the woman's scarring, which is a body's defense mechanism. Such reactions don't happen to everyone, but I wanted my surgery to not include the encapsulation of the band.

2) I was not interested in going back to my surgeon every 3-6 months for life for band adjustments. I also did not want a port sticking out of my abdomen. I am a simple soul. I never paid more for electric windows and door locks in my cars until I no longer had a choice. Less moving/operational parts, the better, IMV.

Now, I did consider a duodenal switch procedure over RNY when it was introduced to me in our WLS classes (not run by a surgeon). I don't know if the DS is discussed or explained too much in renewedreflections, but I had studied it somewhat in obesityhelp.com. It is a totally malabsorptive outcome, while RNY is malabsorptive/restrictive combined outcome (according to the instructors). By the time I was done with the classes, I ran the idea of DS to my surgeon and he said that with "only" 130-150 lbs to lose, RNY was a better choice, so I went with the pro.

I would do it again tomorrow. RNY keeps me in line. Before I knew I shouldn't eat certian foods and now I KNOW not to eat the same foods, with serious consequences if I do.

Your mileage may vary.

I went for the RNY because of the better long term results, because I knew I'd need this for the rest of my life, and because the thought of a port for the fills creeped me out. I had a port for chemo and even though it made the treatments easier I couldn't wait to get it out from under my skin!
