Default I have decided on the RNY...but..

I have figured out what was holding me back on making the decision of the RNY. I laid in bed last night and thought for hours. I know the bypass is the right decision for me. I really want it to be done lapro. My fear is because I have had 2 c-sections, an emergency surgery for a ruptured cyst, and a hysterectomy that they will not be able to do the bypass without cutting me wide open. The last of my 4 surgeries was the hyterectomy where they removed all my female parts and lots of scar tissue. I am hoping with that they will be able to do what they need to do lapro. What do you all think? Doc says he is going to try Lapro but wont know til he starts.

I know this one is silly but my other fear is if Lapro is possible... I fear that Doc wont get my stomach sealed without a leak. I have watched a video of Lapro RNY. I shouldnt have watched how it is done...lol. I know I have an awesome Dr, he is the trama Dr for 3 major hopsitals in our area. He does WLS because it has a special place in his heart.

Guess the nearves are kicking in...and I havent even heard from my insurance company yet!! Talked to the Dr.s office yesterday and no word from MVP yet......hopefully today

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I had open....my recovery time wasn't long and the scar is only a few inches. I had my gall bladder removed after RNY and the doc said he wasn't sure if he could do lapro since my RNY but he was successful....good luck!

Shannon,

Was it your choice to have open RNY? Thanks for your reply. I having 4 surgeries on my stomach knows what recovery is like with an open. I know recovery with Lapro would be easier and quicker but worry that the RNY would be easier for the doctor to preform with an open

Well...sort of. I was selfpay for my RNY which was nearly 20K. It was almost 30K to have lapro. I didn't really want to pay the difference. The main difference was the scaring but....my stomach is so destroyed from stretch marks and excess skin...I figured...whats a scar going to hurt. The recovery time wasn't much different. To be truthful...I had lapro with my gall bladder removal....I feel like that put me down longer then open RNY. The gas and bloat was so horrible...I could barely stand it and had to take pain killers for almost a week. I took pain killers for 3 days with my open RNY. I also have a malrotation of my intestines (birth defect) which was discovered in my pre-op upper GI. Doc said it was better to do open since my intestines were not in the typical spot and they are free floating all over the place. So....it all worked out

They all say that that for the most part, that they will do lab but that if any complications come up they will switch to open - they have to, they have to cover themselves and they have to do what's necessary once they see what they are up against. But honestly, having it end up being open should not be what makes you not go through with it. Open doesn't seem to make things that much more difficult (seems that way anyway - based on the ones here who have had it open and posted). My opinion would be to expect open and calculate that into healing time. Other than that - I would still do it again, even if I was told it was definately going to be open.
Good luck!

Sounds like you might want to hope for the lap, but be very prepared for the open. Do you know when your date is?

Just waiting for my insurance final approval. Doc says can be the week of the 19th or 26th of this month as long as my insurance approves. I was considering the realize band or RNY. I layed in bed for hours last night playing out the pros and cons. I know now that RNY is best for me rather it be lap or open. I am hoping lap but expecting open that way I wont be disappointed. I have survived recovery from 4 other surgeries. I can survive this one too!

I had 2 c sections with adhesions and they did lap without a hitch. They will be working upper abdomen, where the GYN surgeries were pelvic area.

Looks like you are READY! Now for the "get set" and "go" part. ;-)
