Default Wondering about the gastric bypass (HELP)

Hello, I'm new to this site and need some help deciding if i should go thru with the gastric by-pass surgery. I did all my pre-op testing was approved for surgery for the lapband. I went under the knife on Jan 12- 2009. After the surgery the DR. told me that they couldnt put the band on due to scar tissue from a past surgery i had on my stomach when i was 2 years old. I was really upset. DR. told me that the only surgery that I can do would be G-bypass. I'm really worried about going with G-bypass, I lost about 30 pounds on the pre-op diet and weight is now at 248 and im 5'10 (male).. What im really worried about is that i dont wanta lose 100 pounds and get down to 150. I have 3 family members that have had G-bypass and have lost over 100pounds. They look great but they also weighted alot more when they start. I guess what im trying to say is would i lose to much weight with the G-bypass? Is there a way to control the wieght lose? I would love to get down to about 170 the most. That would be about a 70 pound drop from where i stand now.. please help me decide thank you

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

You may go below your goal weight but it is normal to bounce back a little. Also...you lost weight pre-op. Have you been maintaining the loss? If so...is it possible to continue on your own? See Botzz's posts in the non-op section. He has lost a great amount of weight without any surgery. You are the only one that can make the decision. I would think you could slow it down with extra protein drinks.

In any case (standard weight loss diet vs. any weight loss surgery), weight is determined by how many calories you eat. Now, to maintain your current weight, you need to eat about 2400-2800 calories/day, average daily movement. To maintain a goal weight of 170, you will need to eat 1600-2000 calories/day.

One year out I am guessing you will not have a problem eating 1700 calories/day.

My two cents, your mileage may vary.

Hello and welcome. There are several people here who did not have 100 pounds to lose. I think your body would know where it needs to be. I was gonna get the lap band but was advised that for me the gastric bypass would work best and I am glad that i chose it. Just read and research you will know what is best for you. Good luck .....

Thank you all for responding so quickly, I know my mind is weak when it comes to weight loss. I always get down to about 240 then I go back up to 270 or more as i get older. I'm now 34 with 3 kids work 12hr night shift hours. Its really hard to lose weight up and down for the last 19 years. Last 9 years its been going up and up.. i think i do need help with surgery. I'm just so nervous about the g-bypass

At 5'10" do you qualify for rny? I can totally identify with the bouncing we did pre-op; almost made you not want to try to lose for fear the regain would go higher! I think you are smart to ask some tough questions ~ you need to consider your physical health, co-morbidities, genetic factors, and of course your docs recommendations. In my case, whether or not the ins would cover it was important too. Do lots of reasearch, go to your local support group meetings and talk to people. See what their perspective is. Good luck in your decision. Regardless if you go surg or non-wls, this is a great place for support for your journey to a healthier you. Glad you found us

When I first started thinking about WLS I was thinking more about the Lapband than Gastric bypass. I thought the bypass was too extreme and invasive and I thought the lapband would give me more freedom. The more I read about both procedures the more I realized that the bypass would be a better procedure for me.

Take some time to think about how you want to change your life. There are plenty of people who have lost a lot of weight without surgery.

I know, that is exactly the way i feel about the G-bypass, way to extrem for me. But now that is my only way out of my Big promble with foods. I dont make the right choices when it comes down to how much i eat not what i eat. I mean don't get me wrong I do make mistakes on what i eat also . I'm done with diets and the ups and down. Its a big step, everyone is pushing me to do it. I'm just nervouse, down deep I know I wanta do it. I have three kids i wanta be around for. My poor judgement on when to say stop eating is what over comes me. I do great for about 2-3 months on a diet and then boom. I start picking and eating and dont stop until I'm asleep due to over load on sugar. Then of course I beat myself up for doing it. I know the g-bypass is the way to go. I'm just worried and nervouse to go thru it. I think that down the road its going to bite me in the ass. Maybe not right a way but maybe 10- 20 years when my body would really need the nutrience. I have gone to meetings (about 5 of them) and i do have 3 family members that have gone thru g-bypass.

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
You and only you are the one who can make the decision for yourself.
Do a lot of reading, a lot of search and research. Talk with your family who've had GBS and ask what they thought in the beginning, how they think now. I'm sure they will answer you honestly if the know you are serious. Ask them of both the good and bad. Also read up on the information, even if you've gone through them before. Now that you know that if you want surgery, then bypass is the only option, you may hear/read things in a light different from when you thought you had a choice between band and bypass.
((((((HUGS))))))) May your journey go well.

Have you ever considered the vertical sleeve gastrectomy? It is purely restrictive-no malabsorption. I was not willing to do the RNY for some personal reasons and my doctor advised against the lap band because he is taking out 15% of them. So, we talked and he mentioned the sleeve. I decided it sounded right for me--restriction only. Just a thought.
