Since the sleeve has only been done since 2002, there isn't 10-year outcome data for it yet which is why most insurance companies still consider it experimental and won't cover it. However, five-year outcome data shows that the sleeve outcome is just as good as bypass surgery (including for type II diabetes) and better than the band.

United Health Care approved the sleeve last week, good thing since my surgeon won't do a bypass on me because of a bleeding problem that I have. He did say he would have gone to bat for me and probably would have won given my situation.

That is great news! I'm thrilled for you, Jody, and will love following your progress! I attend a support group with bypass patients and hear nothing but problems. I know many band patients and honestly don't know a single one that hasn't had a complication or is happy with their result. I'm the world's biggest (well, that's probably not the best word!) fan of the sleeve. Jane

| "Good for you, thingirl! Yes, the rate of weight loss does depend a lot on your initial weight. It took me 5 months to lose 50 lbs and it took my sister 5 weeks. I had a total of 100 lbs to lose and she had a total of over 200 lbs. Keep it up! "
Thank you for the support and encouragement. I am diligent with exercise.

So from the statistics I"m seeing on here, the rate of weightloss depends on the amount ojf weight you have to lose? Does anyone know an average? My Dr said that the hospital stats are showing that people have an average weightloss of excess bodyweight at 6 months of 50-70%. but the said that is strictly from our hospital, but that reports show upwards of 80% at the 6 month mark. Is this accurate?
And has anyone been through any complications with the sleeve since surgery?

Hi there!
I don't have the short-term data I think you're looking for. I've done quite a bit of research and can tell you that:
Band weight loss averages 82.7% of excess weight at 10 years
Bypass weight loss averages 62-75% of excess weight 5-10 years after surgery
Sleeve patients average 70-80% loss 3 years after surgery (long-term data not available since the sleeve's only been done since 2002)
On the average, WLS patients average a 34% loss in body weight (NOT excess body weight) 2 years after surgery
I have a website with more statistics and links to several studies: The truth about having weight loss surgery in Mexico.

The sleeve makes a tube out of the stomach, and keeps the pyloric sphincter (the muscle that opens and closes the orifice from the stomach to the duodenum) intact. The sleeve can be done by itself as a weight loss surgery, or it can be the first stage for duodenal switch with those whoes BMI is over 60.
