I don't see very recent posts on this procedure. It's been performed since 2002. Studies show that patients lose 70-80% of their excess body weight after three years, comparable to bypass surgery. Obviously, 10 year outcome data isn't available yet. A few surgeons are performing it in the US. It's more widely available in Mexico (at 1/3 to 1/2 the price in the US).
I had my sleeve done by Dr. Alberto Aceves of the Mexicali Bariatric Center a year ago. I've lost 90 lbs and am still losing at the rate of 1 to 1-1/2 lbs per week. I didn't have any complications or problems. I'm rarely hungry and don't have any cravings for food like I used to. Desire for food no longer rules my life. My sister had her sleeve done by Dr. Aceves three weeks ago and has already lost 32 lbs. My only regret is that I didn't know about this procedure (I didn't want the bypass or band) and affordable option (I wasted years trying to get my WLS covered by insurance) years ago and have it done at a younger age.

There are a few of us on here. I was sleeved on March 10, 2009 and I am down 97lbs. The best part about this site is that everyone is so supportive..regardless of surgery or not..and regardless of type of surgery. Welcome and come visit often!!!

I had the VSG on August 11, 2009 and since the surgery I have lost 40 lbs. The weight loss support group that I attend there is a guy who is 9 months out and has lost 175 lbs and has met and currently weighs 222 lbs. He is about 6'3. I guess it depends on the person, age, gender, activity level, etc.

I think you will find that is what everyone will say about not having it done sooner. Especially at a younger age. I love to see everyone get the surgery they want and now we see younger people doing it now compared to when I first started looking at this. Its a great thing.
You know I didnt even know about the sleeve until I came here and I think it was right before I had mine done before I heard about it. I know alot of insurance companys didnt pay for it either just like the band and barely getting the RNY taken care of.
I hope your sister is doing great with it also. If im right you absorb more of your food this way am I correct in saying that?
Welcome to the site. Im Vickie and as they said we support everyone. We even have non- ops here we support along with others. Welcome to the site and be sure to let your sister know about us.

Wow, Lisa, you have done great! I see you have exceeded your goal! Good for you, lady! Don't you feel like shouting this information from the mountain tops? I find myself wanting every extremely overweight person to know about it. Yes, my sister's doing fantastic 2-1/2 months after her sleeve. I just cannot say enough about the procedure and the option of going to Mexico (especially Mexicali Bariatric Center) when you can't get it covered by insurance here in the US.

Did you have any trouble though getting a physican to follow your care here in the states or do you go back and forth for care? That is the only thing that bothers me about crossing to mexico.

Good for you, thingirl! Yes, the rate of weight loss does depend a lot on your initial weight. It took me 5 months to lose 50 lbs and it took my sister 5 weeks. I had a total of 100 lbs to lose and she had a total of over 200 lbs. Keep it up!

I was told by the staff at the Mexicali Bariatric Center that they would handle any immediate post-op complications at the Hospital Almater, probably at no cost. You can consult with your physicians in Mexico by phone and return there if you prefer for any complications that occur after you return home. I had Kaiser insurance coverage and they put me in their bariatric surgery follow-up program (although they wouldn't cover my surgery). They have covered my follow-up blood work, encouraged me to attend support groups and I routinely speak with Kaiser's bariatric nutritionist. I assume they would have covered any complications that occurred.

Im glad you didnt have any. I know we have seen cases in the past they delt with this very thing. People having a complication and they had no backup that is the reason I asked. I know of some who had a physican to take them on for the after care. And have seen some who found no one to take them. That would be the only draw back I would see to it. Again im glad you had no complications from it that required you to go all the way back down to mexico or have to seek help here in the states.

| Sleeve?
Does the sleeve cure type 2 diabetes as well as the bypass does. That is why my gp has encouraged me to have a bypass.
