Default Distal Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

Has anyone here had this type of the surgery? What were your experiences? This is what I am getting and I just wanted to hear about results and any annoyances. I know it differs from the typical RNY, so I just wanted to know if the outcomes were different as well. Thanks!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I have heard of it but really don't know that much about. I will be good to see it explained and I am sure someone will know more about it.

I have never heard of it. What is the difference? from the name it sounds like it is gastric bypass at the furthest part of the intestine?

I've only seen it done with the the very hugely obese the above 55 BMI-ers. My surgeon did these but also 'tweaked' it for people. Mine is a more proximal one.

Distals seem to get a lot more problems with nutritional issues long term. At least from the posts I've seen over the years.

Distal means a much more longer bypass, Medial is less and then Proximal is even more less usually it's? gosh if I can remember the numbers right?--100,200,300? or at least that gives you an idea of what the difference is. I'm sure Doc will make sure to make it much more clear.

Why distal? Distal often causes strong malbsorption issues that can cause more issues than the merit of RNY is worth, so it's pretty much gone out of style. The standard Roux limb is around 75cm (about 30") and can be loger up to 150cm (long limb). Anything longer than that is called distal.

Hm. Well my surgeon said he was doing that type because of my highest weight. I had a bmi of over 50 at one point. He explained he was going to take it just a little further than the proximal one, so I don't think he is going to go to the full extreme. I'll have to clear it up for sure. Thanks guys

So the distal is not the sleeve? My surgeon only does the sleeve if the BMI is over 50.

No, distal is not the same as sleeve. Sleeve has no bypass, just the narrowed down stomach. If the sleeve itself doesn't do the job, then a bypass is created, which then becomes the DS (duodenal switch). A lot of surgeons do the sleeve for the higher weight patients with this two-step feature in mind.
