-bree | I am new to this, so correct me if I am wrong here, but I do not understand why that is a negative attitude ? I am seeing my doctor tommorrow to try and have this surgery. I see the fact you can eat normal food in small portions a positive. You can get your protein and vitiamns from steak and veggies rather than protien shakes and dozens of vitiamns because your surgery will not tolerate so many different foods. I just can not think of a better surgery because it limits how much you eat but still allows you to eat every day food without nasty side effects.
sorry but I do not get where being able to eat normal food is an irresponsible attitude.
I am Australian so things might be a bit different here, lapbanding is the most common weight loss surgery, and the amout of people I know who have had this surgery and can not eat meat, or most vegtables, like peas or beans or anything with fibre in it. They also have so many problems being able to take medications.
I plan to beg and plead to get the tube done by my doctor .

Welcome to the board, applesauce, thank you for joining us.
Hope you find this board helpful.
Please keep in mind, Bree wrote "until now", meaning, until I provided the info about VSG.
I hope you've read my post about VSG in this same thread.
That said, what BreeChick meant was that these people seemed irresponsible to her because they do not stress the importance of moderation of amount in eating, and of making the right choices of food, which both are very important in any form of losing weight, whether conventional or through surgery, and maintaining the loss. They talk in a such a way that conveys the impression that you can eat anything in the amount as before and still lose--in other words, keep the old way of eating and still lose. Which of course, is a misrepresentation. Since the amount you can eat will be limited, though not to the level with bypass or band, you still have to make sure that you get in the kind of food that are nutritious to your body, and not what satisfies your palate and brain first. Getting the protein and fluids in is just as important with sleeve as with bypass. However, a lot of sleeve post ops seem to gloss over this aspect, or neglect this because they seem to be able to lose without much effort.
Ultimately, with any method for losing weight, whether it be with just food choices and exercise, or with the help of surgery, the final point you come to, and enables you to keep your weight loss, is with the correct food choices and diet. Whatever method of surgery you choose, surgery is only a tool and not a magic wand that will do the job by itself, and YOU are the person to make it work, YOU are responsible for the results.
So, unless you work to change your pattern of eating, once the window of best opportunity for losing is over, you may find that the end result is not what you had expected. As I wrote in my post, the incidence of the sleeve enlarging and leading to weight regain is higher than with bypass.
I hope the above info will answer your Q.
(((((((HUGS))))) May your journey go well.

I know one person who had the VSG. She was told by her surgeon that he would not do RNY on her until she lost weight, but he would do this as basically what I look at as an intermediate step. I must admit that this woman did NO research prior, and just did what her surgeon told her. I don't even know if she got the whole story right.
Having said all that, she is now about a year out, and has lost only about 30-40 lbs. Now, I don't know the reasons for the lack of loss, but it seems to me it is non compliance. She has told me that she really never felt any restriction. IF that was me, I would have gone back to my surgeon to find out why I was not feeling restriction. As far as I know, she never went back after her initial follow up visit.
I wish you the best. S

see first post and foot in mouth has hit already
Sorry about that, to me anything meant any type of food, as in no restrictions on the type of food one can eat, which in tern I see as a good thing. I see the orgional poster meant anything as in amount/volume of food which I agree is plain wrong.
I could be in for upto a 12 month wait for surgery here in Australia. I planto do a liquid diet for at least 3 months prior to surgery and 3 months after, and a very restrictive diet (calorie wise) after that so I do not miss that window.
I really have only ever heard horror stories of the inablity to eat meat and most vegtables from those with a lapband, maybe I should looke mor around here and see if there are more positive experences ?
I am sure I am going to have dozens of questions after my doctors visit
Again thank you for not jumping all over me for sticking my foot in my mouth

Hi there. There are several post about lap banding on the boards. Some have had it then it removed to have Gastric. Your surgeon will probally tell you what is best for you when you talk to him or her.

I had the sleeve on April 4, I have lost 90 pound since then. Like Doc said I have to take Calcium every day. Also apparently there is a potential problem with the gall bladder that is countered by a six months course of pills. I have not had too many problems with acid reflux. What I really like about it is that I (personally) find I cannot overeat if I tried. I put vitamin e oil on my scars before I go to bed. One have almost disappeared already and just look like skin blemishes.

what is the problem with the gal bladder ? I am due to have this surgery in 6 weeks (with a bit of luck *LOL*) but am having my gal bladder out at the same time as I already have stones. Every time I have lost weight before my gal bladder plays up hence I want it out at the same time to prevent that pain.
