Default Gastric Imbrication - new procedure

My doctor was the first to perform this surgery west of the Mississippi. From what I can tell by searching the internet, this procedure world-wide is a little over a year old.

Here's a YouTube video of him doing the procedure in early 2010.

YouTube - DoctorDanielCottam's Channel

"Gastric imbrication with the aid of EndoFLIP®. Imbrication is a procedure where the physician decreases the size of the stomach using sutures and sewing rather than cutting. The stomach become roughly the same size of a banana. The EndoFLIP® aids the surgery by measuring the stomach so the new stomach isn't too big or too small."

Basically, it's a way of creating a sleeve type surgery, without any actual cutting and removing of the stomach. Makes it completely reversible and revisable.

This is also the FIRST time in the WORLD, where this EndoFLIP thingy is used to make sure the stomach is a good size. Not too big, not too small.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Sounds like what they used to do with staples. Same concept, anyway. No dumping, so you totally have to depend on being good without help. If you send down calorie-rich foods, the stomach will take what it needs and the rest (if there is any) would go into storage.

Some people would eat so much that they would tear the staples out, requiring revision. How sutures will work instead of staples remains to be seen, I guess.

It's like the old farmer said when he saw his first automobile - "It'll never replace the horse!"

Oh, of course not, but there are people that do fine with the sleeve, so this is a option to that.

I'm just proud that my doc is one of the pioneers on this. :-) He's also one of the first that did the single incision for the sleeve.

The fact that your doctor is at the forefront of WLS technology speaks well of his interest in providing his patients the best possible procedures and results. I'd brag on my surgeon too. (As a matter of fact, mine is one of the original WLS pioneers in Minnesota, and has done thousands of procedures. The two he did for us were flawless!!)

Thanks for posting this. My DH is still thinking about doing some kind of WLS surgery but he doesn't like how drastic they all are. This might be an option for him in the future. His head still isn't where it needs to be for this surgery, he's still looking for a way to eat what he wants and lose the weight. Sigh.
