I can find tons of info about laproscopic surgery but very little about the recovery from open surgery. I know it's more intense and I was hoping people who have had it can refresh my memory. I have to have a revision due to my staple line breaking down after surgery in 1994 and can't remember what the recovery was like other than painful lol A timeline of how you progressed would be AWESOME. My surgery is Wednesday morning and I'm nervous and anxious. Eek!

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

There are a few who've had open surgery, but not very recently. A year or so back.

Basically, recovery is longer because you have a larger/longer incision. What's done on the inside is no different. It takes a week-10 days, 2 weeks if your skin condition is weak, for your incisions to close. You will need to be more careful than lap surgery in avoiding applying pressure to your tummy so that you don't burst the healing incisions. It probably will be a month before you feel comfortable that the incision is safe.

Other than that, there shouldn't be that much of a difference.

Thank you for writing back to me. Thank you also for that timeline. I couldn't remember how long it room for things like bending over and twisting. The month guideline for incison healing gives me a better idea. Hope you have a good day!

Hey D.C.,
I had open surgery, unpectedly in Jan. '11. I had no complications and thought I did better than some of my laporoscopy friends as I had no gas pains...my shoulder
didn't hurt... No pillow needed to hold on my stomach...
My incision had staples in it. When they got scratchy I asked the doc to take them
out. 3? weeks?? cant remember now.
I wasn't expecting the open procedure so the scar had surprised me the most... I guess it has been an issue for me. But since I never planned on a bikini... I use Mederma on it.
I took a few months off from my part time job. Recuperating in a certain time frame wasn't an issue for me i.e. returning to work, lifting, etc... that probably was
a good thing.
I do sit in a recliner with my feet up..perhaps that helped?
It wasn't a bad recupe for me and I wish the same for you.
Good luck, let us know how you do.

P.S>
I forgot, I purchased a waist high dust pan and brush before surgery. It was great..I still use it, I could do a little task here and there w/o bending..and still feeling a tad helpful.....(and I didn't know I was having open.)

Thanks guys! I will have an issue with not being as helpful as I hate to ask for help. I'll just have to suck it up though, obviously. Nervous but excited...ill let you know how it goes.

Its only been 3 months. I am down 74lb and happier than ever. Its still hard for me with some foods being that I have a really grumpy pouch. I wish you the best and never stop asking questions. There is so much to learn

Hi everyone,

I had laproscopic RNY on 6-7-2010 and then on 6-26-2010 I had to go back in due to an abscesst bowel and they did that open so they opened me from right under my bust to my belly button. I really didn't have any problems it healed fine just sore the first couple weeks after 2nd surgery and i had staples for two weeks. I couldn't do heavy lifting till labor day. Good luck with your surgery!!
