Default Duodenal Switch

Hey everyone,
Im new here so I thought I would say hi... HI

I live in Binghamton, NY, which is about 200 miles north of NYC. I had an open Roux-en-Y done in 2002, which was a complete failure. The doctor made the pouch to big, and I ended up with a massive infection, due to a leak somewhere in there. The surgeon never told me I had a leak, nor did he make any attempt to repair it, I didnt know it at the time, but, I was lucky to live thru it. After going through all that, I only lost 50 pounds, which i have regained, plus an additional 50 to boot. The good news, is that surgeon lost his licence to perform bariatric surgery, so at least he can't hurt more people.
As I stated I have gaind 100 pounds since i had that surgery, and as a result, I am no longer able to work, due to bad knees, shortness of breath, and a buldging disc, that causes major pain in my lower back and legs. knowing that if I don't do something soon, I will not live much longer, I began looking for another surgeon in my area that does revision surgery. There are none anywhere near me, so I went to NYC.
I met with the chief of bariatric surgery at NY-Presbyterian Hospital. After he looked at my records and examined me, he decided that due to the first surgey being such a mess, that a revision, would not do anything for mr. So we decided to do a closed duodenal switch. I don't have a date yet, but as soon as I get clearence from my local doctors, and 3 cat scans done, I will get the date.
Has anyone here had a duodenal switch , or gone to NY-Presbyterian Hospital? Any info would be helpful

Thanks

Keith

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
First off, I have moved your other post, the copy of this, to Your Profile as both posts were first in the same forum. Better to show your face in multiple places.

As for DS. I have written something in my post here.
http://www.renewedreflections.com/fo...html#post28256
Now, about the drs at NY Presbitarian. I don't have my deet sheet on hand at the moment, but the Dr. Gagner that I have written of in my post. I thought he was also affiliated with NY Presbitarian, but it may have been another dr at the same workshop. Anyway, I do think you are in good hands there, NY Presbitarian has one of the highest standards for medicine for any hospital.

((((((HUGS))))) May your journey go well.

Thumbs up Dr. Gagner

My, my how small the world is!
I just checked my deet sheet, and noted the link in your profile, and yup, the Dr.Gagner (pronounced "ganier" as his is a French Canadian, for those of you who hear of him for the first time) I am talking about is your surgeon. Though I didn't have the personal pleasure of talking with him, his lecture at the workshop was very informative, and his personality wonderful. You are in very good hands!! He is very capable, and does the DS in two steps, with patients who are at a higher risk because of being in the higher range of obesity.

The next time you see him, maybe you'll tell him, a physician in Japan who had the chance to attend his lecture this spring was very much impressed with his lecture, and enjoyed his talk, and recommends him highly to whomever is in the area he is accessible

Thanks for the welcome everyone!

Yes doc that is funny. I was really impressed with him as well. It definitly makes me feel better knowing that you give your thumbs up on him. We did discuss the possibility of doing the procedure in two parts, but he wont make that desision until he is in there, and sees if there is alot of scar tissue. Of course, I'm hoping that he can do it all at one time. But we will see.
When I do see him again, I will mention you to him, and will also mention this wonderful site!

Welcome to the boards Keith. Im Vickie. I will be having RNY in September. Im sorry you had to go though such a ordeal as you did before. Im glad they got the incompetent Dr out of practice. And congrats on the new surgery you have comming up. This is surely a life changing event.

Yes this shows everyone what could happen and does..... we all need to really research our surgeons to all the extent we can. I for one had a second opinion because my first one scared me to death. He just felt strange to me. Im so glad I went to another Dr and felt much more comfortable with him. You take care Keith and welcome to the boards. Be sure to stay around. You might have questions and we surely will have that we can ask you about. Again Welcome !

That would be so great!!! I don't think any of my family will make the trip to see me, so I would not have any visitors. Sad huh? Oh well, the heck with them.

I will definitly be having the surgery at NY-Pres. I just dont know when yet. Maybe we can meet, when I go there to see the surgeon, to get the surgery date.
Thats up to you of course, meeting a stranger might not want to be the first thing that you wanna do. At least if I'm a day post-op, I wont be to much of a threat

We will see I guess, but I would love to have you visit me in the hospital!
