Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

The money line here is “Bypass surgery is not a miracle treatment and many surgeons do not perform it well,” says Jacques Himpens, MD, of the European School of Laparoscopy in Brussels, Belgium. “Surgical competency is a big issue with Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

This is why you really need to look for a Bariatric Center of Excellence, not just a local area code. I found a BCOE 90 miles away in Minneapolis. At that time, even the Mayo Clinic, which is closer and more convenient, didn't have one. It was well worth it, especially when the surgeon ran into unexpected complications in the middle of Peanut's RNY. He'd already done thousands of these, he knew exactly what to do, he did it, no problem. (But I was wondering why it was taking so long!!)

Not sure about everyone else, but my insurance would only approve a "Center of Excellence" Thankfully I have several friends who had the RNY done by the same surgeon that did mine, and he was HIGHLY recommended. Granted, I'm barely over a week out, but if I had to go back and do it all over again, I would DEFINITELY do it. (But, I don't plan on it)

It was interesting. I've noticed that there are a few people that had banding ended up getting a bypass later. I say one surgery is enough and am glad I went with my bypass.

I started my journey with intentions of getting the lap band. Now I'm not sure....

Stressing....

I was thinking of the band at first. My surgeon showed me the statistics from his database about how banders take a lot longer to lose, and RNYers seem to hold their loss better.

Of course, statistics don't predict an individual's results, but if he thought I should go RNY, and he's done thousands of these, and I'm paying all that money for his expertise, I figured I ought to listen to him! I have absolutely no regrets that I did what I did.

You have to choose. We've had several banders join us recently who have had the band pulled and then done a conversion to RNY. Talk to your surgeon and get the facts!
