Bariatric Surgery: Postoperative Concerns

The above is an American Society for Bariatric Surgery's literature from its Public/Professional Education Committee.
If you have received a brochure of literature from your surgeon, the above may be included in them.
Although some of the terms used here are techincal, it is basically written as information for the patients to be shared with their surgeons and PCP, so the information here should be useful to you, and may answer some of the questions you have right now.

The table of contents are:
1. Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and Dumping Syndrome
2. Bowel Function Changes after Bariatric Surgery
3. Nutritional Aspects of Bariatric Surgery (General Management Guidelines)
4. Reaching a Plateau.
5. Exercise

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Doc~
Thanks for posting this...
did you write this??

I've gotten some insite into some things have happened to me - I had no idea that one of the things that happened is actually 'early dumping!' Not exactly the type of dumping that I was hoping to have - but I'm hoping that I will be able to pinpoint the behavior that is causing it to happen.

While in Texas - I had two episodes where I had an extreme disire to lay down and sleep and LOTS of yawning. I also was feeling upper abdominal fullness, and in one case - nausea.

Anyhow...this article was great!
Thanks again,
Deborah~

Thanks doc very interesting. Now my question late dumping is it a result of something bad I ate? Example the last time it happened it was Yogert and fruit which I normally dont have a problem with and the episode occure 1.5 hours later. The time before that I was at a funeral breakfast and I ate some salad and had a couple drinks (amaretto sours). The episode occured around the same time after.

Thanks for the help

If you read the article carefully, it will tell you that the cause of dumping is
Quote:
Dumping usually occurs due to poor food choices. It is related to the ingestion of refined sugars (including high fructose corn syrup) or high glycemic carbohydrates. It can also occur with dairy products, some fats, and fried foods. These foods rapidly empty from the gastric pouch into the small intestine which triggers a cascade of physiologic events.

This is a great thread. People should always be on top of everything when it comes to their own health, and when it comes to the way they do their diet. Thank you for posting this.
