First off...welcome. and I personally had the Lap RNY in April 4th of this year and do not regret the decision one bit. I thought I would do the lap band at first also, but there were some added complications that scared me and I didn't want to go through all of this to not have as good of results. I worried about the band slipping or wearing a hole, and my finding a way to cheat the band much easier than the other surgery. I have heard that if you have issues with snacking...the band isn't such a good idea, but like the others I do believe that for some people it may be a good option. It just wasnt' the option I went for. Best of luck.

As for as i am concerned, Lap Band solution is best for weight loss. There are many resources online based on Lap Band weight loss solution, read them. It’s a least invasive surgical option, no cutting or stapling of the stomach wall or bowel, reduced patient pain, length of hospital stay and recovery period.

It’s a least invasive surgical option, no cutting or stapling of the stomach wall or bowel, reduced patient pain, length of hospital stay and recovery period. | What type of surgery is best for a person should be decided on from the medical needs of the person receiving the surgery. The points to be considered are how much weight one needs to lose, what kind of comorbidities--type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, arthritis etc etc--on has. The greater the amount of weight you need to lose, the more effective gastric bypass is in comparison to lap band. There is also a very big difference in the resolution of type 2 diabetes. It is over 80% with gastric bypass and 50% with lap band. There are also other things to consider, such as, could you possibly be allergic to the material that the band is made of???? Lots and lots of ????s.
Even with the cost, there are some points to consider. While the initial cost of lap banding may be lower, you will need at least one to two fills to adjust the band, sometimes several fills before it settles, and there are insurances that cover only the cost of surgery, and won't cover the cost of the fills, so you will have to pay for it out of the pocket, which can amount to $400-500 per fill. With other types of surgeries, the cost post op will come mostly from complications, which will be covered by insurance.
The importance of supplementation is the same with ANY type of surgery, too.
It's best to talk of your present condition and your needs and the possibilities with the surgeon before making the final decision.
So, research ALL methods of surgery, gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, duodenal switch, lap banding, etc etc and TALK directly with a medical personnel who KNOWS. It's best to keep your mind open to ALL possibilities before making the final choice.

I would definately talk to the surgeon to see which is best for you. I went back and forth between the lap band and gastric bypass but based on my research, information on this site, a lapband site, talking to people who had WLS and several discussions with my surgeon I eventually chose gastric bypass. It's been four weeks and I'm so glad I chose this method. The fills were a turn off for me, especially with the economy I fears I migh not be able to afford them if something happened and I lost my job |

Hi,
I just posted in another thread having the same problem, so I thought I'd also share the comparison between the lapband and bypass.
Gastric Bypass
-time tested
-operation is complex, it involves multiple areas of the abdomen
-Rapid weight loss over 3-6 months, settling at final weight 10-16 months after surgery
-Mineral absorption deficiency, requires long-term supplements
-Dumping syndrome (intolerance to sugars and some carbohydrates)
-Not reversible
-No significant hardware in body
Lap band
-a new technology
-Simpler operation, gives lower risk around surgery (less chance of death or prolonged hospitalization)
-Slow and steady weight loss, settling at final weight around 2 years after surgery
-Possible deficiencies due to decreased intake, long-term supplements also recommended
-No Dumping syndrome
-Sort of reversible
-Long term (non-reactive) plastic material in body
-lap band must be adjusted for best success
I hope that can help anyone here. But of course, it would be best if you consult your surgeon which is most recommended for you. Good luck! |

Weight Loss MethodSleeve Gastrectomy
| Have you considered the sleeve?
I don't know if the vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VST) or sleeve is an option for you, but it is a very good procedure that you recover from very quickly. It is better than the band or bypass for many reasons: no risk of slippage or erosion; no need for fills; you're able to swallow pills whole; reduced hunger and cravings; no risk of dumping; very little risk of nausea, vomiting or diarrhea; less need for supplements than with the bypass. It's been done since 2002. Studies show that patients lose 70-80% of excess body weight after 3 years, comparable to the bypass. It's being done less commonly in the US than in Mexico now. Dr. Alberto Aceves of the Mexicali Bariatric Center did my sleeve a year ago. I was 243 lbs at the time of surgery and am 155 now. My goal is 135 and I'm still losing at the rate of 1 to 1-1/2 lbs per week. I can eat or drink anything I want in small quantities. I've had absolutely no problems at all. My only regret is that I didn't know about this great and affordable option years ago (I tried but couldn't get several insurance plans to cover my WLS).

We can all swallow pills whole after recovering from RNY.
Cant tell you how many ppl on this board have had their lap bands removed and had RNY.
Lap band 40% success rate.
You can still get a whole bag of chips down with lap band as long as you drink soda or whatever with them.
Love my dumping syndrome...keeps me wholesome.
I have witnessed peoples complications, failure, bankruptcy and depression as a result of lap bands.
Everytime i see one of these posts... I know i HAVE TO SAY.. "its a personal choice between you and your surgeon". (on the record)
As a mouthy hairstylist i want to scream... JUST DO THE RNY..cut through the malarkie..go big or stay home, crunch or get off the pot. (off the record)
Why on gods green earth would you want to have anything reversed? Do we think that we are ever going to stop the urge to put to much or high calorie junk in our mouths?? No we are hardwired to eat..thus the yo yo ing all our lives. I have done the research..its been scientifically proven ..this surgery changes the chemical signals that our brain fires off to make us over eat. RNY has given me life long willpower and for that i am SO SO SO greatfull.
