I am going to have the surgery but I do not know which surgery I should have. Can someone give me some information on the Lap Band and Bypass. I have a grandbaby on the way in November and need to be able to recover fast. |

A lot of insurance companies do not cover the lap band yet, so you may want to start there with your insurance company. If they do not offer it then you can look in to other options.

First off, welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
What type of surgery to have, is something you will have to discuss with your surgeon, I think, as if you have certain conditions, medically, it may preclude one or the other.
Check out the main pages of this site, as it has a lot of info up on the various types of surgery.
Recovery is faster with lap band, as it is not as invasive as bypass, but sometimes, it does not work as well in supressing your hunger. You will have to research all the pros and cons of each type, then you should talk it over with the surgeon and decide.
Everyone's journey is unique and different, so you are the only one who can make the choice.
Good luck, (((((((((HUGS)))))))))) May your journey go well.

HI welcome to the boards!!!!
When i first started my journey i was researching the lap band
but after talking with my surgeon and all my history with being over weight me and him decided that LAP RNY gastric bypass was best for me.
ITS really a personal choice.
YOU will loose faster with the RNY gastric bypass then a lap band. BUT i have seen very successful loosers with both procedures. ME and my surgeon felt i wouldnt have lost all my weight with the banding so that steered me to feel i needed to go with the gastric bypass.
I had no complications.
I was back to my work as a family daycare provider in 12 days and now in 1 years time lost 143 pounds. WHEN I first began the decision process i read a book (dont recall the name, sorry) and one on gastric bypass and after the consult i knew what was right for me.
GOOD LUCK! and feel free to ask away any questions.

Hi Moraldrose!
I am having the GBS. My doctor told me it was entirely my decision. One of the drawbacks he mentioned was that with the LapBand you have to come for appointments more often post-op. I live an hour and a half away from my doctor and work full-time, so that swayed my decision. I've also read some reports of patients being disappointed with their weight loss with the band, and then went went ahead and had the GBS later. One surgery is enough for me, thank you very much

| Welcome!! I know there are many different stats out there...and a lot of different information... I'll just tell you what I was told... When i first started my journey I decided that the lap band was the best choice for me...and knew my hubby wouldn't have as much of an issue with it...but after talking with my surgeon and talking about my lifestyle and all that was going to happen he was very frank with me and told me he'd do whichever surgery I asked him to do...but the facts for me, were this: - I was 198# overweight...classified "Super Morbidly Obese"
- That if I chose the Lap band I would loose about 60% of that weight....which would still leave me in the vacinity of 90# overweight - still classified "morbidly obese."
- If I chose the Lap band I'd have to have the saline fill every 3-5 weeks at $150 a pop...and that could get quite expensive.
- If I chose the RNY Gastric Bypass I would loose about 85% of that excess weight...leavig me about 35# overweight...not OBESE.
That is how I made my decision...I really was going to have the LapBand...but then my surgeon talked to my DH....and explained everything...and it was an easy decision. THIS HAS TO BE A PERSONAL DECISION....you can't just go on what others think or access for you... ...Glean all the info you can .... you will make the right decision for you. If you want to see my process check out my website...it journals backward so you may want to start w/ the archives - "Journey Back to Me" So glad you are on the Boards....WELCOME!~ |

My son had the RNY over 2 years ago. He has gained 40 lbs back, he say that I should have that also but I not for sure. He does not eat right and he also drinks a lot of alcohol also and I think that is what made him gain weight. He goes out to eat a lot and bring home a doggie bag to finish the rest later. That is why I am confused on what surgery to do. I only want to do one. I have to lose about 100 pounds and want to keep it off.

You're probably correct in thinking that your son gained back because he is not watching what goes into his mouth. This surgery is only a tool to help you lose weight, to maintain the weight loss, you have to do a lot of work, in changing your eating habits to healthy eating and lifestyle.
The alcohol bit does not sound well, either, since many post ops get into trouble with alcohol. Whichever surgery you choose to have, the most important thing is for you to keep the good eating habits, and in terms of success, it shouldn't make any difference.
Support groups often make a difference with sticking to your good habits, too.
