| The journey begins .....
Hi, I've heard from my doctor that funding for my gastric bypass has just been approved (he left a message on my mobile on Friday).
I have been trying for almost 3 years to get the operation. Having been overweight all of my adult life (at least 100lbs) and having had huge weight losses and gains over the years, it's hard to believe that I'm being given such a gift. I truly believed that I was never going to have the operation (as I would not been able to pay for it privately) and that I would just have to accept being obese.
I realised when I talked to a friend that I don't remember what it's like to be 'normal' - to be able to wear a swimsuit, fit comfortably in a seat, buy clothes in shops etc. Weight has affected every area of my life - my career, my relationships - everything has slowly fallen apart over the years, and now at the age of 43 I'm being given the opportunity to turn things around.
I am so very grateful for this chance, and although the thought of surgery scares me, the belief that I will be able to live like a normal person, and re-enter 'the world', thrills me.
I'm looking forward to making friends here, it's a great site!
Jo

Hi thanks for the warm welcome :-) Yes, I'm in England, I live about an hour outside London. A little about me ... well I suppose I'm no different to most people in here. I've allowed food to take up a huge place in my life where other people and actitivies should be instead. I don't drink or smoke so luckily my overall health is pretty good but I know if I'm being honest with myself that I have a very strong addiction and if I was going to be able to overcome it by non surgical means, I would have done it by now.
I'm quite a shy person and the weight has insulated me and allowed me to hide myself away from other people. My self esteem is pretty much on the floor at the moment, although I hide it well and people at work believe that I'm a very happy and positive person. I get on well with everyone, and being fat has made me a much kinder and empathetic person - I don't judge someone by their appearance as I know that many people have done that to me. Can't people be cruel sometimes?
I'm so moved to see everyone's before and after pictures - what a motivation it is to me! I have an appointment to see my doctor again tomorrow, he wants to chat about the choice of hospital etc. so I'm sure that after tomorrow this will all seem a little bit more real! I'm still pretty much in shock. In the next few weeks and months I will be spending my free time reading and researching, so that I know exactly what I'm going to be going through (with my new friends here, of course!).
Jo

Hi and Welcome. You and I joined about the same time. I am currently jumping the hoops for my insurance to approve surgery. Learning how to eat right after surgery getting the needed test take etc.
When is ur surgery date? Are you having to do a liquid diet a week or so before hand?
This site has informed me and encouraged me in so many ways, the short time I have been a memberr. Lots of great information and you can bet if no one on the site knows the answer, they will know where to find it or how to get it!
Good luck

Hi Jean, I'm just waiting for an appointment to see a surgeon so I expect you'll be 'done' long before me lol. I'm sure that there'll be some changes to my diet before the operation, and I'm expecting that. I'm happy to comply with anything that I need to do. Every day there's something that reminds me how much my weight holds me back, and it motivates me to make the change, hard though I know it will be. Having done a lot of research, I know that this is definitely NOT the easy option but I have to break my lifelong addiction to food and the unhealthy hold it has over me. Anyway, I hope all goes well for you and keep in touch, Jo x
