| RDA Vitamins after WLS? What is the RDA for vitamins after WLS? I have looked, and cannot find a list of requirements- have just been told to take bariatric vitamins twice daily. Am planning surgery for end of May, so want to get all the supplies handled ahead of time, but am stumped on vitamins! Have heard Flinstones are OK, but they have sugar-wouldn't this cause dumping? Centrum Silver has a chewable with no sugar, but have not heard of anyone using them. The bariatric specific ones seem so expensive, and I have to come up with $1600 pre-op, so money is tight! Already use Caltrate chewable calcium + D, so will continue that. Have to figure out what to do for B12, and Iron too. Am feeling overwhelmed right now!

Relax, and take things one thing at a time.
As far as RDA goes, what your body needs daily is no different whether you've had surgery or not. The difference comes from the fact that with the types of surgery that limits absorption, you'll become unable to absorb the amount of vitamins you need, so it's safter to get about twice as much as a regular person does.
With calcium, you need to get it in the citrate form, as bypass patients absorb that better than carbonate form.
The reason your surgeon suggests bariatric vitamins, however expensive, is because it's developed to meet the particular needs of bypass patients in regards to absorbtion.
Also be careful that you space some of these vitamins and minerals apart, as there are things that together will inhibit each other's absoption.

I take Centrum chewable (regular, not silver) as recommended by my Dr. I take them twice a day. Ask your surgeon, but since my vitamin has iron I don't have to take another supplement.
Also a sublingual B12 dot (very yummy). I have heard others get injections, so we will see how my labs turn out.

My surgeon recommended 2 x RDA of all vitamins at minimum. I use a liquid vitamin, noted on my bio page. It has mulitple of all vitamins needed, and is taken with a one ounce dose. Much easier than pills.

I just went to my first support group meeting last night.
One thing they did say is that they have changed their mind about post-surgery patients taking childrens multi and/or flintstones multi. The nutritionist said that people taking those end up deficient later when blood tests are done - time to take adult vitamins. I know with the centrum I started with the liquid, now I have chewable, and at this point once I run out I can get regular. She also said your B has to be spray, sublingual, or shots, not chewable and not patch.
And never take your multi with your calcium. It binds to the iron in your multi and you don't get the full benefit.

QT82699, If your multi has iron, you shouldn't take it with calcium. They use the same receptor site so you aren't getting a full dose! Take them at different times.
carylk - I take the Flintstones twice a day and don't dump from them, they don't have that much sugar. I compared them to several adult vitamins and 2 Flintstones have the same amount as one adult vit so I don't see why they won't work. You could compare them to the bariatric and see what the difference is.
You can get the B12 dots at Walmart, as well as just about any other vit/minerals.
There are lots of discussions on this site about calcium carbonate vs: calcium citrate, I just take both. Check with your surgeon to see what he wants you to take.

My surgeon who has done this type surgery for many years including the old kind is a Flintsone man. I take two a day. I discussed this with him on my last visit. He said unless my blood work come up strange he wanted me to continue to take them. Its somthing we have to take for life. If they watch you like they should you should have labs done every few months to check on you and the levels. Dont stress out over somthing you dont have to. Im agreeing with Barbie on this one. When I first had surgery I took a spray vitamin. It didint have all the stuff I needed in it. This was sample the surgeon give me and after he researched it he found it wasnt enough.

I was taking the centrum chewables as well, and calicum and b12 sublingual. Now I have switched to Optisource for bariatric patients they are just a little more than all of the others put together and they have all of what is needed and take 4 a day. Just easier for me/
