Hi all, I had my 3 month check up today and I am already low on iron. Surgeon wants me to take 325 mg of iron on top of the 2 childrens multi-vitamin with iron that I already take.
I was really surprised I was low and am wondering if I should be using a different multi-vitamin with iron other than the childrens.
At what point did you change over to adult vitamins with iron? Also are there any foods that you would suggest to get extra iron in naturally.

Thanks Laurie

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I have always taken an adult vitamin. The things that I can think of that has lots of iron in them are spinich and liver, I think that my DH's dr told him once was that the green leafy vegies have iron in them.

I agree about green leafy veggies being a good source of iron. Also, if I might suggest, switch from childrens chewable to adult chewable - centrum has a chewable multi. Look into it, because at one of my support group meetings the nutritionist stated that they are not pushing the childrens chewable for bypass patients any more because post ops are coming up deficient - (at least in the patients she deals with). And are you making sure to not take your calcuim within an hour of your multi/iron?

If you look up something like "foods high in iron levels" on Google, you'll probably find something. If not go to The World's Healthiest Foods and check there. This is a good nutrition reference site.

I would take the adult chewable centrum. Also I throw spinach in just about anything I cook to add more iron- spaghetti sauce, and ground meats like meatballs and meatloaf, eggs, you name it!

I haven't suffered an iron deficiency....and my multi doesn't have iron in it...I guess I'm getting it from all the protein rich foods/veggies....let us know what you discover...it could help others here who have had low iron!

I have always taken Flintstone chewables. The Phamacist recommended them. But I am also supposed to take 150mg of Iron a day, which I don't do every day because of the constipation factor. Although I noticed on Bariatriceating.com there are some low dose iron tablets that claim they are non constipating. I may give them a try. I figure it is better to get 96mg in a day instead of just the 36 from the multi. When I had my last blood work done I was slightly anemic. So I think this should help some.

I was iron deficient pre surgery, have been taking a supplement Niferex 2X daily, at my 3 month bloodwork my iron levels were good but my vitamin D was low. So I have to say that the iron supplement really did help. I also concur with Denise about you getting off the children's vitamins, I was a t the same support group meeting about them not being sufficient coverage for adults and people were having vitamin deficiencies. Good Luck...
