| The scoop on protein requirement
Okay, so....
I have managed to get my hands on a medical book published this year--Manual of Nutritional Therapeutics 5thEd. David H. Alpers et al.
p.586-Estimation of Recommended Daily Protein Intake.
Normal: g/kg IBW/day -- 0.75g (IBW=ideal body weight.)
Estimation of IBW for adults:
Woman with medium frame: 120lb for 5ft of height + 3lbs/in.
Man with medium frame:130lb for first 5ft of height + 3lbs/in.
Small frame: subtract 10lb from above.
Large frame: Add 10lb to above.
Even if you are 100kg now, if your ideal body weight is 70kg, then the calculation is 70x0.75, not 100x0.75.
FYI 1kg=2.2lb
I have listed only normal, because though the list has requirements for various medical conditions, there's none that weight loss surgery fits into.

I'm sorry Genmel - but that was funny!
I can't offer any help either since I'm the one that started this mess and caused all the confusion.
Maybe pm Doc Sanae.

Sorry it's kinda hard to decypher.
First off, you calculate from your ideal weight, not your present weight.
0.75g of protein per kilogram of your ideal weight.
1 kg=2.2lbs. 1lb=0.45kg
So, if your ideal weight (not your present weight, remember, unless you are actually there) is 60kg=132lbs, then 60x0.75=45g.
Now, keep in mind, this is your basic requirement. Depending on your phsycial condition--serious illness, pro athelete etc--the number goes up. With bypass, you have malabsorption, so adding 10-15% to that to be safe, is best.
To calculate your ideal weight, if you are 5' 5", then 120 + 3x5= 135lbs.
Just take note that your ideal weight may be lower than your goal weight, whether you set it or your surgeon set it. If the goal weight will put your BMI below 30, then you can consider that you've done pretty well. There is no need to try to get to the ideal weight, so I just hope this equation won't freak out any of you reading this.
REMEMBER, WHATEVER THE BASIC THEORIES IN THE MEDICAL WORLD, AND OUT ON THE INTERNET, THE MOST IMPORTANT THING, AND WHAT YOU NEED TO DO FIRST, IS TO FOLLOW YOUR SURGEON'S INSTRUCTIONS.

| I think I got it
So, if I did my math right... My ideal body weight is 120 lbs. which translates to 50 Kg. Then I multiply 50 x .75 = 37.50 grams then I add 10-15% to that which means I need about 42 ish grams of protein a day.
Whew... that makes me very happy because I am good if I get 45 grams in a day.
Thanks for sharing this with us, Doc.

Doc. I am COMPLETELY lost. According to those little charts, my ideal body weight is 137. Thank goodness, that's definitely not my goal, but can you PLEASE tell me, according to my ideal body weight, how much protein I should be getting in in a day? THANKS!!!!!!!

Christy, 137lbs converted into kilograms is approx. 62kg. So, 62 x 0.75 = 46.5g Add to this, 10-15% to account for the malabsorption loss. So, 46.5 + 4.65= 51.15g, 46.5 + 6.975 = 53.475g
However, if your surgeon requires you to get in at least 60gs, then 60gs it is for the rest of your life. |
