| Info on protein
I read earlier today in a post where the quality of protein or what kind of protein should be taken was questioned. I came across this info today...Whey protein isolate is better than protein concentrate because it contains more lactose and less protein than the isolate. They also stated that Profect(sp?) bullets and new whey protein were rated 5 and 6 out of 100 on pdcaa's scoring system of the quality of protein and anything with collagen as an ingredient is basically useless. You will not get the correct amount of protein needed for your body so that the body basically will eat it's muscle to supply the rest of the protein it needs. Thought it might interest someone.....

the latest newsletter from unjury was about the very same subject. here it is for those interested:
Important New Protein Quality Guidelines from Surgeons
If you have been reading our updates, you know we have regularly advised that:
- whey protein ISOLATE is better than whey protein concentrate
- collagen-based products such as the test tube products get very low
protein quality scores. Profect and New-Whey are calculated
to have a PDCAAS of 5 or 6 out of a possible 100 (1).
Historically, we have perhaps been the only ones saying this.
Now the bariatric surgeons, dietitians, and nurses have just issued
Protein Quality Guidelines, and everything they recommend is
consistent with what we have said.
While many many products do not meet the guidelines, you should know
that for every single new guideline, UNJURY matches it 100%, fully,
completely, exactly, and it always has.
While the full set of guidelines should become available on the web soon,
here are some of the key messages from the guidelines (2).
1. It’s not enough to know how much protein you are getting (how many grams).
You also have to look at the amino acid profile to know about the
QUALITY of the protein. (Some proteins have almost zero value.)
2. The PDCAAS scoring is the superior way to rate protein quality
(it looks at the levels of each indispensable amino acid).
3. Doctors, nurses and dietitians are advised to use Caution
when recommending any type of collagen-based protein
supplement (for example, the “test tube” products).
So you too should use Caution when using products with
hydrolyzed collagen.
4. Whey protein ISOLATE is better than whey protein concentrate.
(Concentrate has more lactose, and gives you less protein.)
5. Recommended daily grams of (high quality) protein:
70 grams per day during weight loss and low calorie diets.
The society issuing the guidelines is the
American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS),
and almost certainly your surgeon, dietitian and nurse are members.
The guidelines were announced Monday June 16, 2008 at the ASMBS annual meeting.
You can be sure that most of the products,
those which don’t fully meet the guidelines,
will try to make it sound like they do, or will try to
say that the guidelines are not important.
But here are 2 easy rules to remember:
1: “Caution on Collagen”
(e.g. about 94% of the protein in the test tubes is collagen)
2: Whey Protein ISOLATE is better than Whey Protein Concentrate
Here are three key messages from the guidelines:
A. “The PDCAAS score indicates the overall quality of a protein.”
B. “The PDCAAS score indicates the body’s ability to use that product
for protein synthesis.” (Protein synthesis is necessary for making every cell
in your body.)
C. You can lose lean body mass (for example muscle and organs
including the heart) even if you get the right number of grams of protein,
if the protein doesn’t have each and every
Indispensable Amino Acid IN THE RIGHT AMOUNT.
In other words, even if you used 3 of the “test tubes” every day,
you can still lose muscle and organ tissue because the test tubes
have a deficiency in indispensable amino acids. (1)
We hope this is helpful. If you have any questions, please do ask us.
This is too important to your health.
Healthy regards
Martha and Jerome

| How protein is metabolized in our body
Some basic facts about protein.
Proteins are a group of substances that are formed from chains of various amino acids. In other words, amino acids are the basic materials of protein.
Protein is not abosbed into our blood in its original form, it is broken down into amino acids then absorbed.
Our body then builds the protein that the body needs from the amino acids.
There are many many amino acids, and our body has the ability to produce a lot of them, but there are 10 amino acids that the human body can't make, or can't make in enough amounts that the body needs. These are called "essential" amino acids, and must be ingested from food or supplements, whether in the amino acid form, or as protein that includes these amino acids.
Protein in vegitables and crops (yes, they have protein too, though most in small amounts) include some of these essential amino acids, but not all, so you need to eat a variety of these to cover all the essential amino acids.
Meats including fish--chicken, turkey, pork, beef, seafood--have all of the essential amino acids.
This is why it's recommended that you try to get in as much protein as you can from meats and fish, rather than depend on protein supplements.
The proteins for protein supplements are usually extracted from veggies and crops--soy, whey etc--and so, may not have the complete set of essential amino acids, unless the company producing them makes it a point to include them all. This difference may be reflected in the difference of cost--obviously, the supplements that cover a wide range of amino acids will be more expensive, because the manufacturing process will include more materials and ingredieants.
I hope this will help your understanding about protein products.
FYI: List of essential amino acids
Threonine
Lysine
Methionine
Arginine
Valine
Phenylalanine
Leucine
Tryptophan
Isoleucine
Histidine

Thank you very much for this post. especially at this time when I got back to basics. I have been lately statring my day with a protein coffee (Jay RobB) Whey chocolate flavor protein powder it yummi. then have it as a snak during the day either the strawberry flavor mixed with multi-frozen raspberries or as a bar.
His protein is isolate, it's smooth and get dissolved easier than other brands I highly recommend it. (in fact thanks to littlelisamarie she's originally recommended it to me) thanks again
I can see the deifference on the scale and also on the quality of my skin and hair.
Thanks again for the info

Whey protein is better than soy. If you could find one with whey like Jay Robb I think the name is but I've seen a lot of people on here take the one you are and they seem to be fine. You want to make sure you get the best quality protein so your body doesn't take it's stores from your muscles.

I just realized I posted this in the wrong area, so posting again.....
I just purchased a whole box of 12 at Nutrition World for $30. The brand name is "Precision Engineered" whey shot. It consists of a protein blend of collagenic protein isolate, whey protein isolate & casein protein isolate..so, I hope it's a good form of protein. They only had the Fruit punch flavor & its nasty! Tastes like cough syrup..but I think i'll mix it with Crystal Light like Joanne does, maybe that will help. Im looking forward to trying the blue rasberry. The good thing is, it's only about 3 oz..so if you can just plug your nose & chug it down w/something else to drink with it, it's bearable! At least it's easier to take in than all the protein drinks ive tried..plus im lactose intolerant, so not so many options. Just glad I can introduce protein foods in a week or so. Can anyone tell me what protein foods you are pureeing & what tastes the best? I know chicken is really high in protein & was thinking about blending that w/broth.
