Thumbs up Vitamin D issues with everyone

I've read a recent major magazine article on Vitamin D shortages in the US population. This article stated that over half of the US population was either low or severely low in vitamin D levels. I thought my initial labs showing shortages was just my issue--but it is a major issue. On TV last night ( I think NBC news), there was a segment on vitamin D shortages. This research center stated that half of the US was deficient in normal levels of Vitamin D. Their recommendation was for EVERYONE to take a 1000 IU D supplement daily, including kids. But for the WLS patient, this should definitely be more. My D levels started out at 8 as a post op, when normal levels start at 25. I was given 50K IU D caplets, taking one per week for 12 weeks--I did this 3 times and could only get up to 14. Then I switched to a liquid vitamin, and my D levels got up to 33--in the normal range but not very high. So now I augment my daily diet with a 5000 IU D capsule from Vitalady. Vitamin D is very important for overall health, so you should pay attention to D levels on lab work, and you'll probably have to augment your diet with D. DAVE

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Dave I saw this to. I have been fourtante so far and mine have been good. I do drink atleast a half a cup a milk daily. Im not lactose intolerate thank goodness. I do try to get all my vitamins and calcium natually from foods. The only thing that ever comes back low on my labs is folic acid. I do have to take a precription med for that one. I take spray vitamins. I cant digest the Flintstones for some reason. I have been starting to switch however to the Nature Made Multi Complete. Its a soft gel and I run it through my hands to make it open better before taking it. I must be doing somthing right! Thanks for the post. Im sure it will benefit many.

BTW Vitamin D was added to milk years ago to wipe out Rickets.

I've been trying to find the article, but can't locate it online yet. The article also referred to people low in vitamin D being more susceptible to several forms of cancer also. My D levels are 33, but that's not far above the 25 minimal count for the normal range of D. I'm glad you happen to be in good shape as far as D levels go. Most of the US population is not as lucky as you. I did find an article from Miami, FL TV, where they even cite a major problem with low D levels, although they are noted as a very sunny area. If you can find the same artilce, it would be good to post the link for everyone. I've just spent about 20 minutes and can't find it . DAVE

Dave I can find the link however......... they dont have a supported page for it and tells you to go to the washington post site. When you do this they make you register for the information. Another place I read it was in the New England Journal of Medicine. Drs have these laying around after reading them and I always grab a peak at what is going on. I searched this site to and they make you register for it also. I will keep looking because this is important information for sure.

Hi Dave,
I was shacked that I had such a low deficiency of vitamin D. They put me on 50, 000 iud of it for 8 weeks, so I'll be interested to see my labs this month to see if I've improved.

I had 3 courses of those 50K IU of D. It raised my D levels from 8 to 14. Got the levels up to 33 with liquid vitamins, as they are absorbed better. But I still want to get to the current recommended levels of above 70, so I'm taking 2 of the 5000 IU capsules of D3 from Vitalady. DAVE
