Default Vitamin D

MORNIN EVERYONE,
I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT VITAMIN D. I WAS JUST TOLD BY AN RN THAT I WORK WITH THAT I NEED TO TAKE VITAMIN D TO MAKE SURE THAT THE CALCIUM I AM TAKING ABSORBS INTO MY BONES. IS THIS TRUE? I DO TAKE NOW THE MULTI VITAMIN AND THE CALCIUM RECCOMMENDED BY MY SUREON AND DIETTICIAN. IS THERE ENOUGH VITAMIN D IN THE MULTI VITAMIN THAT I AM CURRENTLY TAKING, OR SHOULD I BE BUYING VITAMIN D OVER THE COUNTER. THIS IS HONESTLY, THE FIRST I HAVE HEARD OF THIS. JUST WONDERING ABOUT IT.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

MOST of the calcium products have the D built in to them.
At least all the ones that i by doo.

WHAT from of calcuim do u use? viactiv and citracel chews also
have more D in it to help with that matter.I also take both types of calcium being thats a debated issue on what bypass patients absorb
so i just take both thru the day.

Yup. You need VitD to help absorb calcium, and as Lisa says, many calcium tablets are combined with VitD. Don't panic, check the formula of whatever supplements you are taking, and if something includes VitD, you're fine. If you haven't been taking VitD, switch to one that has 'em in it.

BTW, I am moving this to the Vitamins and Nutrition forum.
Hope you don't mind.

WELL, I just want to make sure what I am taking is fine. I just checked my vitamin bottle and it says that it has for adults vitamin D in it. THEY ARE FLINSTONES COMPLETE. I was advised to take two a day so I do. For my calcium, I take also two tums a day. I SURE HOPE THAT IS GOOD ENOUGH. LET ME KNOW. I would rather get extra than not enough. THANKS AGAIN GIRLS.

Ah, but there's the hitch. You can get an overdose of VitD, as it is fat solubule and stored in the liver. The average daily requirement is 400IU, so if your mutiple vitamins include as much, no need to take more.

but then mike not to confuse u ....
some people say the calicum in TUMS isnt absorbed
by bypass patients. MY surgeon says its not true but
to be safe i use the tums and the citracal to cover both
kinds.
DOC whats your view on which we do absorb???

Sorry, I don't know the VitD content with citrical tabs.
Since a lot of stuff get absorbed less with GBS (gastric bypass), and 400IU is for healthy ppl, actually, twice that probably won't do harm, but no more, and also, it would be best if you had your VitD blood level checked every year, just in case, if you are getting twice or more of the required daily intake.
Best thing to do is to ask your surgeon on your next visit.
