prior to surgery, I was so used to buying food outside especially junk and fast foods. now I sometimes end up not eating at all because of my busy schedule and I don't know what healthy options are out there. I try to pack lunch and snacks on a daily basis but it's not always possible. and sometimes you get tired of the same foods. any suggestions. can someone recommend a protein bar that actually taste good? Thanks

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I know how you feel. I am still pre op, but I am pretty much on the same diet as I would be post op. I like Pure Protein bars. Low sugar, low fat, and high protein. You can get them for pretty good prices at Target. What I also have been doing is to make things in bulk and package them up for a couple days worth of rations. So if I make chicken, I make more than I need so I can put it away for the next days lunch. If I make fish, same thing. Same with steamed veggies too. Then I can just put them into containers and reheat them later as needed.

Shakes have been great for me as well. I have tried lots and some I don't like, but others aren't bad at all. Necter is one I just tried that the weight loss program I am in recommended. Met-RX is ok, but has a funny after taste, it really fills you up though. Aria I really don't like so I am saving it until I find something to mix it with that I like. Spiru-Tein is one of my favorites, but the last place I went to didn't have the variety I got last time that the nutrition info was better on. So this time I got Chai Latte as an every now and then kind. It tastes so great even my hubby likes it. He says it tastes like Chirstmas. Other than that, the Pure Protein shakes in the can are good and low cals and all that with high protein.

So I would suggest make a large amount of meats that you like and package them for the week. Then get some good protein bars to keep as a back up just in case you don't have anything else or will be out and about. Cottage cheese is good protein, but hard to keep if on the go. Protein bars are great for on the go though. If all you can find are the large Pure Protein ones then I would cut them in half as they are really big, and have too many cals if you eat the whole thing.

Here is a list of proteins from my binder I got from my weight loss program:
Meat, poultry, fish, and shellfish
Eggs, egg sustitute
Milk, Yogurt (low fat, low sugar, low cal)
Cottage Cheese
Cheese
Custard pudding (made with milk)
Legumes/Beans
Peanut butter (low fat if possible)
Tofu and other soy products
Protein bars and shakes (low sugar)

Hope that helps. Good luck to you.

BUSY~~ DON'T tell me....
here it is....
you have to test the different protein bars, since each & every one of us have certain favs your NOT gonna get ONE bar that is extremely popular. You may like something I can't stand so I suggest test 1 bar, I use the pure protein, southbeach & atkins bars, also the same with the shakes. ALWAYS watch out for the HIDDEN sugars... they like to stick those in there to let the bars taste good...
when you look at the carbs you look at the total carbs, subtract the fiber & sugar alcohol & that is your "net carb" I try to keep mine below 10, sometimes I'm good other times not so... Some dump off the sugars, unfortunely I DON'T!!!
tuna fish can be made the night before, hard boiled eggs, use the mini cottage cheeses, ff plain yogurt usually has great protein in compare to those already sweetened.. you can add some sf jelly to sweeten.
invest in SMALL tubberware containers.. they will be put to GREAT USE!!!
hopefully i was of some help to you.

You may need to be careful of protein bars that taste good, because they just may have too much carbs and fat in them, even if they have a lot of protein. You want to find something that's high in protein but low in fat and carbs, especially since fat and carbs can cause dumping.

Not all bars that claim to be "nutritious" are, by our definition. You have to read that label on each and every one of 'em! Peanut and I like the Pure Protein brand. I'll eat any of them, but Peanut'll pass all the others up if there's a box of the Chocolate Deluxe handy!! We get 'em at Wal-Mart.

In addition to all the others have said, string cheese sticks have a lot going for them. You can get lowfat or fat-free, too. Some like jerky, too. I still don't trust beef jerky, as it can be awfully stringy, but chicken or turkey are really good. Can't make a steady diet of it, but it doesn't take up much room in your purse, comes in bite-size chunks, and will keep well through a nuclear war!! Doesn't take much to satisfy, either.

How about the little individual serving packs of tuna? Be creative! There are a lot of things you never had on your menu before that could increase variety and meet requirements, and there's room for them, too, now that the carbs are gone!!

Good luck!!

Keep trying. Be creative. Get yourself some small containers you can easily pop the top off & put finger foods that are high in protein in them, fat free string cheese, turkey jerky (I like Michigan Brand-it's not dry, hard or chewy it's more like eating a piece of turkey breast), broccoli, cauliflower, cottage cheese, tuna in a tiny pita pocket...

The thing here is you HAVE to make that time to fix up your foods the day before so they are ready to go in the morning when you leave. Protein bars are NOT the answer except in emergencies really OR if you have needs for a really high protein intake and just can't get it from eating food.

Decker gave some really good ideas for food...those resuable containers you can get that are I think ziploc brand that are really small are perfect. I have used those before for taking food to work last year and also for the food I had to have after workouts AT the gym. Stuff like PB mixed with dry milk etc..messy but spoon it out from those containers..you're good!

This is still a time of learning for you..how to CHANGE those bad habits and make new GOOD habits..so don't use the excuse of being busy in order to slide back or even be tempted to slide back into 'old ways'..CHANGE is a good thing, promise!

I agree with the ziploc containers and the string cheese.... well all of it acutally. Im not much one into protein bars daily or shakes. Remember apple season is upon us! This always was a easy thing. I peeled mine and threw them in a ziploc bag when working and there is no mess to it what so ever. They are good for you and used to be used in alot of medicines years ago. The apple is also a great tummy food. Mine can hurt and I eat a couple cubes or slices and it takes my tummy ache away. I have seen people eat them after having cyst removed of the tummy also.

I always carry string cheese with me in my purse. I used to leave it at work also.
