Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

The recommended calcium for best absorption for us is calcium citrate. Here's this from the Viactiv website:

Q. How much calcium carbonate is contained in one VIACTIV® Calcium Soft Chew?
A. Each VIACTIV® Calcium Soft Chew contains 500 mg of elemental calcium from 1,250 mg of calcium carbonate.

Q. How well absorbed is the calcium in VIACTIV® Calcium Soft Chews?
A. Calcium carbonate, nature's most concentrated source of calcium, delivers 500 mg of elemental calcium in each VIACTIV® Calcium Soft Chew. The calcium in VIACTIV® has been clinically demonstrated to be absorbed as well as the calcium from low-fat (1%) milk.

Q. What is the source of the calcium in VIACTIV® Calcium Soft Chews?
A. Calcium carbonate.

Some information from Nutrition Advice by Registered Dietitians - HealthCastle.com

Calcium Citrate e.g. Citracal or Solgar:
Absorption: Calcium is best absorbed in an acidic environment, hence calcium citrate is the best absorbed supplemental form of calcium. It does not require extra stomach acid for absorption, hence we may take it anytime in a day, even on an empty stomach.
Calcium content: Calcium Citrate usually provides less elemental calcium per pill than Calcium Carbonate, therefore one may need to take a relatively more numbers of pills per day to meet the needs.
Pill Size: Calcium Citrate is usually small in capsule form.
If you suffer from acid stomach, it is best to avoid Calcium Citrate.

Calcium Carbonate e.g. Tums or Caltrate
Absorption: Calcium Carbonate is alkaline based, it requires extra stomach acid for better absorption, hence it is best taken right after meals or with a glass of acidic juice such as orange juice.
Calcium Content: Calcium Carbonate is the most prevalent calcium supplements in the market . It provides more elemental calcium than Calcium Citrate hence you may not need take as many pills.
Pill Size: Calcium Carbonate usually comes in a bigger tablet, some people may find it harder to swallow.

Since we don't have much of a stomach any more, we don't have much stomach acid, so a calcium that doesn't need it to be absorbed has a lot going for it from our point of view.

Class dismissed. There'll be a test on this later!!

I attended a bariatric support group last week and they spoke about the Viactiv chews there. The PA leading the group said they do not recommend the Viactiv chews because they were not absorbed that well by the gastric bypass patients. They recommended taking the Calcium Citrate tablets or the "petite" pills.

Okay so the calcium carbonate in the viactiv is not good for us? We need calcium citrate? I need to find a good tasting chewable calcium and multi-vitamin soon. My surgery is coming up in less than 2 weeks and I really want to be prepared... And suggestions on a good tasting one which won't cost me an arm and a leg LOL... How about the ones from Bariatric Advantage?

As I posted yesterday in a different thread, we use packets of calcium powder. Add it to your water with a flavor stick and you never even know it's there!
