| Protein bar recommendations
Other than the obvious "pick one with high protein and low/no fat or sugar", anyone have any specific recommendations?
I was looking while at WalMart today since they're on my "things to try" list starting next week.
The ones I found that looked good were: Pure Protein - Eat Good. Look Great.
One of the 50g bars, for instance, has 200 Calories, 20g Protein, 18g Carb (but only 3g Sugar), 5g Fat. They do have 7g sugar alcohols, but I've never had an issue before and that seems to be holding true.
They all have 3g Sugar or less and between 18-32 grams protein depending on the 'flavour'.
I know there are recipes for making them too, I'm just curious if this looks good for a store bought one, and if anyone has any other recommendations.
Obviously, only the pouch knows for sure |

Yup, this is what we prefer! Peanut especially likes the Chocolate Deluxe bars, but I'll eat any of them.

I go for the lower carb ones, they are hard to find but not impossible. Vitamin Shoppe here sells the Power Crunch bars with 13-15 grams of protein and only about 10 carbs and the Oh Yeah wafer ones have 8 grams of carbs, those I've found in GNC.
Be careful with protein bars though because they have been known to cause cravings for some of us and they should really only be used once in a while in a pinch for a meal replacement. I don't have a problem with cravings after eating one but still only carry one in my bag when I go out incase I can't get a good meal out.

I use the Pure Protein and the Atkins bars. The Atkin bars are my favorite.

There are two out there I really, really love!
One, you can find at most stores or pharmacies in the diabetic section (So you know it is low in Sugars!) It's called "Extend Bar" (NOT Glucerna!) it is low in carbs and high in protein with no sugars.
Here is the nutritional info: ExtendBars Nutrition Facts, Ingredients, Carbs, and Allergy Information
For the Extend Bars, make sure you use the Sugar FREE version! (Those were the only version I found at my local Walgreens)
The Pure Protein and Atkins (low carb) are good, but I am one of those who can dump on Sugar Alcohols... The other bar I really love (and just found) is Quest Bar! They will even send you two FREE bars to sample! Check out the nutritional info on these babies!
> Quest low carb protein bar
What I like about them is the simple ingredients! (Protein Blend (Whey Protein Isolate, Milk Protein Isolate), Chicory Root Fiber, Almond Butter, Dry Roasted Almonds, Raw Almonds, Water, Natural Flavors, Sea Salt, Lo Han Guo, Sucralose)
These can only be ordered online, but they shipped to me my samples (and an order I placed) within a week.
Atkins bars will make me dump, as will anything with too high of sugar alcohols or to many carbs. Pure Protein bars are great in a pinch but I can only do "half".
Good luck! I know Eggface and I think Nik have some protein bar recipes on their sites.
Warmly,
Jackie

Mostly my thinking is things like, the state fair is coming up in a couple weeks, to have when coffee hour runs into lunch time after church and I need to eat, etc.

Yup, Peanut and I both pack a bar with us when we go to church - just in case. They aren't meant to be a steady part of your diet, but they sure make good emergency rations!!

I took a Pure Protein bar in my pocket when I hiked the 6 mile round trip to and from Rainbow Falls behind Mammoth Mountain last month. That saved me, boy...we didn't eat lunch for another 2 hours after we returned...I would have WILTED if I didn't have that bar in my pocket.
I buy the assortment of Pure Protein bars when I am in Sam's Club. My daughter has started bringing them to school with her. She prefers to lunch at home, mid afternoon. The bars act as a buffer to get her through the day.
