Unhappy iron level to low and dr. says I need blood transfussion

in late january I had my blood work and my iron level was 9.6...I am now taking two iron pills a day with vitamin C. in 2 more weeks I get tested again and if it has not come up to normal or very close (13) the doctor said I need to have a blood trasfussion....is that normal to have a blood transfussion...I could see if I was at 6 or below? has this happened to any one else?

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I don't know about blood transfusions but about a year ago I was severely anemic from loss of a lot of blood. I can't remember the exact level I was at but was also put on iron. My pcp said it would take about 6 months to get my iron level back up. Two weeks sounds like a very short time. I empathize what you must be feeling right now. It took me months to regain any energy. I hope you will rebound quicker. Hugs

Your level is low . I would do exactly what he ask you to do however ok and make sure you take that iron and try to eat iron enriched foods if you can. I have had to have a transfusion honey. From a bleeding ulcer after surgery down the road from it but that was a different story but dont be scared of it. You just need to try to get your iron up the best you can and if you can then they can help you with it. Im sure they told you that Vitamin C is somthing your body dont store. You acutally pee it out daily. So make sure you keep it in you. Just take the iron like your supposed to and it may come on up and suprise you how fast if can come up.

I know we have a lady that used to come here and she still has to have them done but its linked more to her cycle I think and blood loss that way along with the surgery. Make sure your taking all your vitamins like your supposed to all of them. They all do matter. Good luck with this and please keep us updated.

For encourgement...... honey they screen all blood now.. for alot of things. Its a safe supply. I know if not for 6 people giving blood when I needed it I wouldnt be here today.

Heya. Last year my iron was down to 2 and I just had to have iron injections twice a week for 4 weeks, had another test and it showed my levels had risen enough (12 i think??) that I could go back to 1 x iron tab a day to maintain it. I was quite tired at the time, but not falling over. however there was no mucking around, I had the 1st injection that day. Maybe ask if you can have those instead first? The levels are the base stores and they had to be built up. I have maintained the levels for quite sometime, but will have a blood test soon to make sure.
The iron injections hurt a little, but not a huge amount. It does leave a dark stain that looks like a bruise but that is fine and a small price to pay
Best wishes and I hope you get it resolved quickly.

Transfulsion is the quickest way to bring up all the levels, not just iron itself, but your blood counts as well. It sounds drastic, but it would be quicker than wait around for your levels to come back up only throught medication, whether oral or IV. In fact, your body will work better at absorbing what it needs with better blood counts, including iron.
Even if IV iron brings the iron level up, from there to up your blood counts will take some time. Your dr probably doesn't want to wait that time out, so he's going for the transfusion first, then have you keep on taking iron supplements one way or another, until everything steady's out.

Another point. You posted in another thread that you regained some. Together with your low iron levels, it makes me wonder if you had been takiing your vitamins and minerals as religiously as you should. If not, poor vitamin and mineral levels can lead to a slew of problems, including your body trying to hang on to everything you eat, because it is lackiing in vital elements.

I have a tendency to be anemic and my levels always dropped very low during pregnancy and cycles. I did drop down to 4 right after after surgery and got an iron infusion. It helped almost right away. I do take iron daily.
One thing to remember about taking your iron, it's best not to take it with your calcium.
If they feel you need the transfusion, then, please follow their instructions.
I hope you are soon feeling better.
