Default Post-op labs

So, got the results of my 12 month post-op labs today.

I was driving so just got the basics.

Vitamin D was low (not surprising as it was low pre-op), and the protein marker thingy is low. So, they recommended adding about 10g protein a day and prescribed a Vitamin D supplement.

I'm going to see if I can get the full details since I'm curious. Oh, and I wasn't fasting so no blood sugar or cholesterol labs. Some other time.

Good to know that everything else seems to be inline though :-)

Up and Up (Target brand) children's chewable 1x a day which includes 18 iron, and I'm at 800 calcium (was working on increasing but I guess not now), B12 and biotin (which they don't test for I think) as well. Yay!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

"Prescibing a D supplement" indicates those green 50K IU softgels, usually once per week. These virtually will do nothing for RNY post ops. I used them at one per week for 24 weeks, and 3 sets of labs later my D levels rose from an 8 to a 14. That's less than half of low normal. You need a dry D3. I used a 50K IU dry D3, 4 per week, for over 2 years. Labs then were at a 65. Optimium D levels in many studies show that levels of 80-90 offer optimum health benefits. Inadvisable recommendations are not uncommon from a lot of physicians who have limited expereince with wt loss patients. My HMO is making a major effort to educate all of their physicians about wt loss surgery patients. RNY post ops should have the 80-90 level for vitamin D and have a B12 level of 900-1000. These levels are higher than levels considered adequate for the population who has not had wt loss surgery. I get my dry D3 50K IU from vitalady.com . Low D levels are very common with a lost of populations, and more common with wt loss surgery post ops. I'd highly suggest getting the dry D3 50K IU, and begin taking 3 per week. Retest in a couple of months. You'll find your D levels are much higher than using the script D. Script D is a D2, which is not absorbed as well as a D3. I've seen more than one study that seems to indicate non wt loss patients absorb D3 bettern than standard D2 also. Be aware that the less expensive dry D3 in the form of sofgels is not wise to use. RNY patients will malabsorb oils, and vitamins in oil are less effective. I also take a vitamin A and a vitamin E, commonly seen as softgels. But I get these in pill or dry capsule form for better absorption. DAVE

The only script D I've ever seen or heard of is a D2. A dry form of D3 will work far better. I've been through this issue from day one after my RNY. A dry D3 was the only thing that gave me significant increases in D. Please let us know if it's a new D3 script, as I've never heard of one. Many of us on these forums offer our experiences to make post op life easier for newer patients. Get a REAL NUMBER for your vitamin D levels. And compare with tests after several weeks of usage of the script. Good luck with your supplement recommendation. DAVE

BTW I went to Celebrate's website and got a sample pack of their vitamins and have been taste testing them. They have a sublingual Vit D 5000 IU that wasn't half bad. Don't know if it's D2 or D3 or what but it's another resource.
